M1A Socom optics

Recommended Posts

I'm considering putting an Eotech 553 on a Springfield M1A Socom. The other options I've considered are the Aimpoint M3 or PRO or the Leupold Scout 2.5x28.

Can anyone talk me into or out of any of the above?

Where would the mounting location be for the EOTech? I'm assuming pretty far forward on the handguard rail?

Yes it's forward of the receiver.

I don't own a SOCOM M1A, but my uncle does and I've fired it with an Aimpoint in the same mounting location. It worked fine, and the additional eye relief gives you more SA by not being so close to the tube (and I like that). Follow up shots (controlled pairs) weren't always easy since the additional eye relief and recoil (vs 5.56) made it difficult to immediately reacquire the dot, but it was still a good option.

With the EOtech the reticle gets bigger the more eye relief you have so I don't know how that would look from that distance, but can imagine that could get pretty annoying to some. I find it difficult to see targets with that reticle and would think that more eye relief/bigger reticle would exacerbate that.

Here is what I did. Weaver 4x28. So far I like it but not shot enough rounds to give a review.

Thanks Jeff, How do you like the long eye relief? Any problems with acquisition or with two-eye open shooting?

spend the extra money and get a micro-t1. I don't hate my PRO, but i do wish I got something smaller so my eyes wouldn't have to work around the big PRO, not to mention pulling it from the bag and not getting caught on things... The good news on the PRO is that battery life is insanely long, and the front cover is clear so I only have to flip the back cover down to see my dot. Not too mention it came with a sweet mount that has perfect co-witness.

Have ou done anything yet. I am needing same for my socom.

Nothing yet. I should have my SOCOM in hand in the next couple of days. I think I'm going to shoot it with iron sights to get used to it then put optics on it in a little further down the road.

I put a Eotech on my socom. I didn't care for it. I thought that it was to hard to be accurate at range. I got an arms 18 so that I could mount a scope in a normal position and I have not sighted it in.

I would go with the Leupy Scout. I was in Outpost this weekend and they had an M1A set up like that. I handled it and it was very handy. It is the scope I am going to put on my lever .44mag.

Nope, not CDNN. I picked mine up from Bud's Police Supply. I think I'm gonna run mine on iron sights for a little while until I decide what optics to put on it. right now I'm leaning towards the Eotech 552 w/ the .308 ballistic reticle.
