2005 Grand Caravan Steering Column/turn signal switch

Wifes van has an issue. The hazards work fine. The turn signals will work at first, but then stop working. Sometimes, you will put on the left signal, and the right will work and vice versa. Did some research, multiple issues I've read about point to the turn signal switch/assembly. They have them at autozone.

I've replaced one of these in my old Jeep, but I read one comment that you have to tear apart the steering column and you are not allowed to because of the federal rules and the airbag. Doesn't sound right to me. From what I remember, you remove the cover, unbolt the switch/arm, pull it out, put new in, and put it all back together, no big deal.

Anybody done this or familiar with this?

Does this sound like my problem?

2nd issue.

The door locks stopped working. Can't use the remote, can't use the switches on the door. They don't autolock once above 15mph. I can reset them by unplugging the OID or IOD fuse in the fuse panel under the hood and they will work again for a short time then stop working again. I unhooked the battery and got the same results. I have read about a TSB that reflashes the body controller to an updated software level. Anyone heard of this issue or know more about it?

that sounds about right for replacing the t/s switch. there is federal law that says you cannot remove the airbag from the vehicle, but you shouldn't need to do that to replace the switch. i would pull the fuse on the airbag system and let it sit for about 15-20 minutes before i work on it though just to be safe. as for the door locks, i seem to remember something about the bcm needing to be reflashed, so you might want to set up an appointment with your local dodge dealership.

Legally, you can't remove or disable the airbag. Disconnect the battery and pull the airbag fuse. I've no experience with your van in particular, but sometimes replacing those stalks is easy, sometimes not.

The door lock thing sounds like a bad ground to me.

I have replaced several, mostly on GM models. The multi-function switch bolts to the column and the wire harness probably runs down the steering column and plugs in under the dash, so you might have to take the panel off under the column too. The airbag isnt a problem, airbag wires are in a yellow plastic sleeve so there easily identified. The only law I know about is that you cant disable the airbag and operate the vehicle. Disconnect the battery first. A fried PCM is expensive to replace. The hardest part will be removing all the plastic without cracking it and getting it back on so it looks right. I havent done a multi-function switch on a Dodge, but it should be pretty much the same as GM. Try the 2 dollar flasher fuse first before you buy the switch. I know a guy that put the expensive new switch on first and it ended up being the cheap flasher that was the problem.

Looked at the plastic last night in the dark, looks like multiple pieces put together, got to be careful, looks like it is pretty flimsy. I'll definitely disconnect the battery.

On the flash and computer update, is this a dealer only deal or can I go to someone else that has a scanner? I'm thinking dealer, but not sure if that is the case.

Reflashing the computer(s) is a dealer-only thing. Think of it like a firmware update.
