Problems with new P290

I bought a Sig P290 and took it to the range this weekend and ran about 50 rounds though it. I liked it first it fit my hand and was accurate. Then it started to have problems between every one to four rounds the gun would not fire. I would sqeeze the trigger and the hammer would not go back. I would keep squeezing the trigger until the hammer would go back and then the gun would fire. Later I when it would not fire I would push on the hammer and then I would hear a click and then the gun would fire. I called Sig and the guy told me I had to break the gun in. He told me to field strip it and run another 50 rounds though it. I do not think that is going to any good but I am going to try it. This is the first new gun I have ever had any problems with, and this is my first new Sig I have ever owned, I hope that is all it is.

I'd insist that the store you bought the gun from send it back to Sig for an overhaul. Sure, minor problems are expected in a break in period but what you are describing is more than typical. Sorry you got a dud but it will get resolved.

the good news is SIG is the best in class for cust service and will remedy the problem quick.......The bad news is this is not

@ Nikator, I bought new on gunbroker, and I have not called the the dealer I bought from yet. I tried to buy local but the cheapest place was $710 OTD with only 1 mag and no holster. I bought this for $540 with 2 mags and a holster. I know Sig will take of it, because I do not think it is a break in problem.

@ SonnyCrockett I hope customer service is a little better next time I call them.

If you're squeezing the trigger and the hammer does nothing, that is not a break-in issue, that is a mechanical failure. Don't bother talking to the dealer that you got it from. Just contact Sig and ask to send it in for service.

Agreed. Just send directly to Sig, they'll fix it up. Good deal on the gun, even with shipping and ftf.

I would at least try the other 50 rounds. What does "break in period" mean anyway ? What is the difference in a hammer not seating fully at first and a FTF/FTE ??? I know how that feels but don't tell me that every new pistol must be expected to fire perfectly out of the box. Doing the extra 50 will at least help your case -if it does not resolve it.

I don't own one and I am not affiliated with Sig but I have bought pistols from great companies that had break in period hiccups and then became completely operational...

and I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Agreed. I would field strip, clean, lube and try again. Did you strip, clean and lube before the first 50 rounds?

Was the click the trigger resetting or the gun going into battery?

What ammo were you using? Did you field strip, clean and lube the gun before you shot it?

Packing grease and dirty ammo will clog up anything. If the round is chambering but not completely going into battery it may be dirt.

Sigs like wet rails to run, I always have some CLP with me at the range and hit the rails every 150 rounds or so.

I'd run 300 to 500 rounds before I'd consider it broken in.
