Useltons 1911's

I have been shooting down at Uselton's, and they have some sweet looking (and expensive) 1911's. Does anyone own one, or have ever fired one? I am interested in their quality and build.

Actually, I was serious, then I realized I violated my own "Search first, dammit" rule. Sorry for the stupid question, I was there yesterday and there is no appearance of a chapter 11.

not if you ask him.

Sooooo, I take it there is not a lot of love for Mr. Uselton? :) I like the range (though it is expensive), and I like that it is close to home for me. I do not want to go to the 'Boro to shoot indoors.

I have handled a lot of Useltons 1911s before. I am by no means an expert on firearms or let alone 1911s. Most people on here will just ramble on about the reputation they have read about on here. Some backed up by facts and some by hearsay. If you want to know about one go handle and shoot one, or talk to somebody who actually owns one. I met one guy who owned one of every 1911 that Rick makes. Do I think there are other better/good options? I have heard from others that you can get the same quality guns with other names.

The range is by far one of the top ones around. After I leave On Target I can taste gun powder for two days!

The rumour is they were built by Sam Hoster in Gallatin. He is a Master Gunsmith and knows his way around a1911. This was told to me a while back.

He is a great gunsmith and has done alot of work for me. He is really good with older firearms. His apprentice was Chad Kandros at Kandros Customs now. The ones I have held were very well made. But this was several years ago. Sam is in semi retirement from what I hear. It is said he was paid consultant on the new Remington 1911 R1 . I have heard this from reliable sources.

Everything you said is 100% true except the semi retirement part. He works all the time, but if he wants to take a week or two off to go fishing or play golf he does. Besides that he is working on guns 4-5 days a week. FWIW, I usually talk to Sam once a week.

Work with a former employee when they were on Conference Drive in Goodlettsville. We recently had this same discussion. He said Uselton's customs were factory guns with his name on them, He did the same thing with the gun safes. Said he was a real work.

New issue (June 2012) of Combat Handguns Magazine has a full 'Combat Test' of the Uselton IA Commander .45ACP 1911. The IA (Integrated Aluminum) is a 28 oz. commander (4" barrel) 1911. Must say that it was a VERY positive review and the 25 yard accuracy test is as good as I can remember them achieving with any gun. I'm not a fanboy, don't know the Uselton people and don't own a 1911, but it's nice to see a local company praised for their work. The article describes in some detail a fairly unique process whereby they bond 303 stainless steel rails to an aluminum base frame using an 'explosive bonding' technique that has been used in aircraft and other industries - it's a type of cold welding process. If you don't subscribe, it's worth picking up a copy of this issue.
