Magtech hard primer?

Recommended Posts

Posted

Was down in New Orleans for Mardi Gras, and I went shooting with a buddy who I just got into gun ownership and 1911s. Long story story short we had magtech rounds loading into the barrel, the primer striking, but no discharge. After the issue was safely resolved we talked to the guys in the shop and they said magtechs just have hard primers. I've fired magtech .45s through a variety of handguns including a couple different kinds of 1911s but I've never had that issue. Has anybody else experienced this with magtech?

I've read a bit about that. In my opinion, the bottom line is that if your gun won't reliably ignite any primer from a major manufacturer, you have a gun problem; not a primer problem.

A 1911 should have plenty of umph to set off any properly seated pistol primer unless it has a really light mainspring. Personally I've found 15 pound mainsprings iffy and 17 and above to be perfectly reliable.

When it first happened I thought it was a firing pin problem myself, told my buddy the gun wasn't safe to fire, and we cut the range trip short. I'm with you guys. The next time I talk to my buddy I'll talk to him about tinkering with, or replacing his mainspring.

I'm not familiar with that one, but the reason I asked is because any 1911 with a FP safety that works off the grip safety like the Kimbers, can get out of sync. It's not that unusual that the grip safety will allow the trigger to drop the hammer but wont get the FP block out of the way.
