Break in

Sigh, chattanooga strikes again. Some reject tried to break into our house today, got scared by the alarm I am guessing as they did not steal anything (that we can tell) or (as we can tell?) even come inside. Lucky really, all we had to deal with was a broken door & waiting on the police. Police took 1 hour and 2 phone calls to arrive (alarm company called, 1/2 an hour later I called again, finally came by). Super nice guy, when he got here.

Alarm co said it tripped at 4:30, we were home by 4:45, could have been there when we got home, it was close.

Really nuts, PC and gaming systems in sight to be taken.

Could have been a lot worse all around.

Wow, that was close. Thank goodness it worked out as well as it did.

Just goes to show you can't count on the police to save your butt. Glad everything turned out ok.

This is the reason I generally carry more than just a pistol with me. At one point I had a shotgun in the trunk in case I came home to an intruder.

The reason I started doing this is because a friend said that if a bad guy was in my house he was no doubt better armed than me with a pistol. After that hit home I started carrying more than just a pistol. I am still deciding on what to keep permanently with me.

An intruder is bad enough but my brother, who has tried to kill me in the past, is once again living close by and using drugs again. He took a brief break from his drug use but is back at it. I am always afraid of coming home to him on one of his tantrums. He is eventually going to kill our parents but they allow him to live with them and are codependent. They all play the victim and blame anyone else for their misfortunes.

Yup. When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

Individual responsibility is the order of the day. True grit.

@Dolomite sorry to hear that. Will hope he wises up one day soon or just disappears before someone gets hurt.

Not likely. He has them where he wants them. He threatens our mother in order to get her money. Our father looks the other way when he does because he sees my mother as an object that is less than human. My brother has even made her buy his drugs for him. I told her she could get arrested if she got caught with them. She said my brother told her she wouldn't get in trouble because she was buying the drugs for him. I told her it wasn't so but my brother told her that I, as LE at the time, didn't know what I was talking about.

He has done some pretty heinous stuff to our mother. And when I called the cops my father and brother bully her into telling the cops nothing is wrong. Then they tell the cops it was me with the problem. And having 3 vs 1 the cops whould believe them. My father is a bully and she gives him her paycheck a lot of times or deposits it into his account. And when she needs money she has to go to him to get money. And then she has to pay him back for any money he gives her. He has told me she doesn't deserve anything.

A few years ago I gathered my mother up while she was at work to make sure she could get a restraining order against my brother after he assaulted her repeatedly. This was so my father and brother couldn't bully her to prevent her from getting one. My father actually came into the court house, made some threats to try to get her to leave without filing the order. When that didn't happen my father made her move out of their house so my brother didn't have to live on the streets. She didn't mind because she actually went into hiding for about 6 months because my brother said he was going to kill her for getting an order of protection against him.

I haven't said two words to my father since September 23rd, 2009. That morning he called me saying my brother was holding him at shotgun point and wouldn't him leave. I told him I was calling the cops and he said my brother said he would kill anyone who called the cops. I asked my father how would he know and my father said he would tell my brother I was the one who called. SO I went to the sheriff's office and they said they couldn;t do anything unless my father called. They said me filing a complaint was heresay and they wouldn't respond. SO I left but on the way home I saw my father outside so I stopped. I told my father I wouldn;t put up with my brother's antics. My father said if I ever called the cops on them again he would "take care of me and my family". He said this as he made a pistol out of his finger and thumb and pointed at me. That was the last time we talked and I will not talk to him ever again. I won't even be present when they put the SOB in the ground.

Because any time I get involved they try to screw me over I have washed my hands of the whole group. Hopefully the violence doesn't come to my doorstep again. My brother tried to kill us in October of 2009 and was arrested but he was released to a mental institution for a week in lieu of any criminal charges. His only mental condition is his heavy drug use.

Sorry to vent but you must always be prepared to meet violence with more violence.

Dolomite, I am very sorry to hear this brother. I hate to see anyone have to go through this. That is a very sad situation.

Man Ihate to here this Crap Im in Chattanooga to I had a Home invasion 3 weeks before christmas Last year And I tell you it is really Hard to get your sense of security back after something like that happens to you I actually shot the guy atleast twice hell the second time I hit him he dropped his gun and still managed to get away . The police have to know who he is because they got his gun and he wasnt wearing gloves but still no arrest been made ever since then I open carry a Full size XD 45 5iinch with hollow point ammo just because im not a huge fella and its hard to conceal something that big and after hitting someone with a 380 atleast twice and have them still kicking ive wised up my wife is always armed now aswell . any ways here is a link to the news story if you would like to check it out .

as for you and yours im really glad everything turned out ok and I know you have that fealing of nervousness right now and its gonna be tough to get some sleep for a couple nights just hang in there bro it couldve been a lot worse :)

Well sounds like you needed to, and that this particular apple rolled far from the tree. Also sounds like you did all you could. Family comes first, but YOUR family comes before anyone else, including blood. Nothing but respect coming from me on this subject.

Glad to hear you didn't get hurt. You, without a doubt, did the right thing. Hopefully they can catch those who are responsible. Unlikely but if they do it is also unlikely they will have any serious time to serve.

There is no way to describe that feeling in your stomach when you realize what is about to happen. That is unless you have been through it. That nausea and sinking feeling when the adrenaline hits is hard to describe. It hit me me pretty hard that day but I was able to manage it because of training and overseas experiences. Now after he was caught it felt like I needed to sleep for a week as I came down.

All the stuff I describe happened about 2 years ago but he is well on his way to another episode. We are going to live our life as normal, just more heavily armed and more often. Everyone, including my brother, knows I am armed at all times. My wife carries the majority of the time as well. We have secondary weapons close by and enough ammuntion to remove any threat he might present.

@ Jonnin: glad everything turned out ok. I understand home invasions are up here in NE TN as well. Things are getting worse fast out there...

@ Dolomite: dang, bro... I thought my family was messed up. Prayers and good vibes from me and mine to you and yours. Maybe your mom will come around before it is too late. Sounds like she just lacks the self-esteem to get out of a bad situation. As for your dad and brother... well, I'll keep my opinion to myself...

Thanks for the support guys. Sorry to hear of your troubles Dolomite, not much encouraging to say there except hang in there & do anything you can for your mom on the side, as you can.

Plank --- wow, quite a scenario. The police only have prints for criminals (and a few others, permit holders, etc) on file. If this guy has never been caught, and is not a permit holder or whatever... they cannot ID him. That is assuming the prints on the gun were any good, they have to be decent quality. The officer didnt even take the prints at my place... he looked for them for a bit and said what little there was on the door were unusable. They may not have gotten much useful off the gun.

Thanks Bro and yes that fealing does hit you like a ton of bricks without even realising it my Military Training basically took over and I found myself Laying down suppresive fire .Its kindof stange that when you least expect it something like that can happen and previous training actually kicks in.Im really sorry to here about the fued between you and yours I do know a little something about crappy relatives but not to the extent you describe. Im glad you have gotten away from that and have found a way to provide safety for you and your wife

well i watched the detective pull some prints off the Xbox and then they were trying to get prints from the gun but it didnt look he could however there were 2 really good prints he pulled from the magazine inside the gun so I know they have Prints. But in anycase Im now more than ever aware of the Fact that LEO's are mearly a Reaction force ,and that the individual is soley responsible for them and there familys protection . Even if the Police could arrive in under a minute thats a Minute to late .Now i find myself with that in the back of my mind alot and its Hard to get your sense of security back but we manage :) Like I said though Im really sorry that happened to you but Im really glad that it happend the way it did and you and yours were not Hurt .

Hope and Prey for the Best but prepare for the worst

I lived in Chattanooga about 12 years ago and it didn't seem like it was a bad place to be, and now all I hear about is home invasions and shootings in that area. What changed? I know the economy is bad but still...maybe I was too young to notice how bad it was back then.

Dolomite: That's some heavy stuff right there, I can't imagine how I'd feel in your situation. I don't know what to say except don't give up on your mom, and you're doing the right thing (as I'm sure you know) by arming your family.

chatt is suffering a bit of growing pains. Not really population wise, but the city as a whole (gov't and citizens) are not used to urban issues. Gangs, meth, poverty/economy, illegals, pimps, the usual suspects are all at large and our police are undermanned, government has its head in the sand and spends all its time trying to keep our image clean to attract tourists. We officially have no gang problems, for example, according to (I think it was) the governer or mayor or someone like that. Yet a kid opened up with a 223 on a schoolbus, and we have shootouts in the public parks between ... dunno what they are, if not gangs. Basically no one wants to even admit there is a problem, let alone deal with it, so the problem grows...
