Does County matter?

Morning, all, been lurking since September and this is my first post.

I am going to do the application for my permit today. I have some other business to attend to out in Oakland, TN (which is in Fayette County) but I live in Shelby County. Would I be able to my application in there, or does it have to be done at one of the full service driver's license centers in your county of residence?

Any Driver's License Center (full service) is fine.

From the Tennessee Department of Safety website:

To obtain a handgun carry permit in Tennessee, you must first successfully complete a handgun safety course offered by a handgun safety school that is certified by the Department of Safety.

You should then make application at any full service Driver Service Center. You will need to bring with you the original copy of your safety course completion certificate, proof of US Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Residency, photo identification such as your Driver License, and $115 NON-REFUNDABLE permit fee. This fee may be paid in cash, credit card, money order or with a certified check. If there are no problems with the application and you meet all eligibility requirements, you should receive your permit within 90 days of the date we receive your application.

When your application is processed at the Driver Service Center, you will be given instructions on being fingerprinted.

Notice it says any full service Driver Service Center. I don't think that county matters. Do notice, however, that it says full service Driver Service Center. Not all Driver Service Centers are full service. For that matter, there might not even be a full service center in your county. I believe the Drivers Service Center link may actually be active in the quote, above. If not, go to the TDOS website and look at the Handgun Carry Permit FAQs, the above is the first in the list - click on the link to be directed to a page where you can find a list of full service centers.

Thanks for the responses guys. I did notice that it said "any". But we have all encountered those situations where "policy" of the department differed from what the law seems to say.

I am here now.... Should be done in, oh, 2 hours.

One thing to remember many counties don't have full service stations....so those residents must go to another county to apply.

It took 2 hours, but my application has been submitted. I can't imagine how long it would have taken had I gone to the Summer Ave office in Memphis. I was able to schedule a fingerprinting for 12:20 this afternoon, so that has already been done, as well.

Now the waiting game begins.

Yeah...always a bit of difference between more populated areas and those that aren't. Sort of like when the restaurant bill was still being argued when it comes to alcohol and how the law treats beer and whiskey different. Lots of places around here that serve only beer, but not whiskey...but anyway.

Hope it all goes through well....reports lately of people getting HCP in 2 weeks or so...

The day I did my application I went to the Summer ave station first, BUT that little building was packed full of people... So I drove to the Oakland station. I was in and out in 30 minutes and 18 days later I had a nice gift in the mail box!!!

When I took the class, the instructor recommended we use Oakland rather than Memphis. He also gave a warning about traffic enforcement in Oakland.

When I first got my HCP, I went to Jasper (Marion Co.) vs. waiting 3 or 4 hours at Bonnie Oaks.

In and out in about 15 mins. Plus pleasant staff vs. surly malcontents.

Win win for me.

My permit came in the mail yesterday. 19 days from the day I put in the application and completed the fingerprinting.

Trying to think if I need anything from walmart..... hmm.....
