im thinking about building an ar pistol in 9mm. i bought a couple of stripped lowers in the psa sale a couple months ago. from a legal stand point im fine as long as the lower has never been mounted to a rifle....correct? anything else i should be aware of? thanks in advance for the help!

The lower receiver you use has to have been listed and sold as a pistol recevier in order to legally build a pistol with it. Check the sales invoice or contact the seller for confirmation.

Tnwnger, I think it goes like this, if the lower was sold as a pistol or has stamped on it "pistol only" then it can not be used on an SBR. You can not have a stock readily available or a buffer tube that can swap out to a rifle buttstock. Dolomite_Supafly can chim In he will know the proper terms. But I'm quite confident what I said was true. I too have researched this same issue.

i believe from everything i read....it does not matter how it was transferred. as long as a "rifle" upper has not been mounted to it and u follow all of the pistol rules. just wanted to make 100% sure.

the transfer as other anymore. Just virgin

use. Don't let someone try to sell you one

They are now being transferred as receivers. Unless the shop doing the transferred screwed you and put rifle on the 4473 then you can build a pistol without a problem. You could call and ask the shop that did the transfer to pull your 4473 and see how it was transferred to you. There are still shops out there that believe anstripped AR lower is a rifle.

It is not against the law to take a pistol can convert it to a rifle. It is, on the other hand, illegal to take a rifle and convert it into a pistol. There is no way to legally convert a rifle into a pistol. It is either a pistol or it is a registered SBR, no other options.

Just make sure you do not have a pistol length barrel on a firearm with a shoulder stock unless it is registered as a SBR first.

thanks for the help guys. looks like im good to go. bought the receivers from psa and had them transferred through coal creek. the lower im wanting to use is a virgin. only thing thats touched it is the carpet in my safe.

u can go from pistol to rifle....but you can never bring it back to a pistol. it must stay a rifle.

a palmetto state armory i bought back when they had their sale. i bought 2 and already built a rifle out of the other one.

I knew under 16 was sbr but didnt know if there was a maximum length you could put on a pistol lower.

There is no maximum length for a pistol, at least not federally. Now there are states in which barrels must be under a certain length. Not sure about Tennessee but I do believe there is a maximum within this state.

I would verify that your lowers were transferred to you as receivers and not rifles.

What made you choose 9mm? Did you consider .40? I am wanting to build one just like this. Range toy and home defense. Obviously 9mm is better for range, .40 maybe better for defense (although that's argued to death) but with 30rds I'm not sure you can go wrong with 9mm

its mostly going to be a range toy. with that said...price of ammo lol.

got my build done yesterday. going after work to put a few rounds for it. still have to decide what i want to do for sights. thinking about putting a primary arms micro dot on it. have one on the rifle and it works great. ill post some pics this evening.

Can't wait for report and pics. would love to go the pistol route as well, but thinking about a SBR version of my Colt Sporter now.
