Young woman raped in Vanderbilt parking garage

Recommended Posts

IMO

State legislators and college administrators are responsible for the latest in a series of rapes on the Vanderbilt campus.

The police have since caught a suspect -- big whoop! -- of course, after the woman was raped.

If there were Campus Carry, even if there was Parking Lot carry in Tennessee, then the odds are this and other cases would not have happened.

Criminals are stupid, but they are savvy enough to troll campus and hospital parking lots where they know their victims are unarmed. They don't frequent city parking lots as much, because they know they'd could get blasted by an HCP carrier. Lay the blame for these attacks at the feet of the state legislators, the college administrators, the hospital administrators that allow this to happen.

If this is the guy I am thinking of, he was charged with 2 rapes, 1 att. rape, and 1-2 counts of robbery. The best part is he was out on 50K bond already.

Speaking of which, does being re-arrested cause you to forfeit the bond? I know that would mostly punish the bondsman since he would likely never get paid by the waste of carbon, but still, less bondsmen could lead to less crime.

here is my only issue with campus carry. I think staff and instructors should be able to carry but the young generations are not being brought up around firearms like a lot have us were and I just don't think they can handle the responsibility. I mean you would almost be a SR by the time you can even legally own and carry a hand gun.

But staff should be able to carry with a permit.

If that were true, wouldn't students be irresponsible off campus as well? However, I don't remember hearing of a significant number of people being shot by 21-yr old college students off campus, if there were any at all.

So you are basically saying TN should raise the age requirement for getting a carry permit...? That is what it sounds like. At what age do you suggest people are mature enough to carry a firearm?

Taking care of that lack of experience is what training is for and training should be encouraged. Unfortunately, a lot of "adults" who were raised around firearms need but don't get training.

The way I see it, if you are old enough to die for your country you ought to be old enough to protect yourself from the thugs and two-legged piles of crap that walk around preying on people.

If I'm not mistaken the age to carry is 14 in Alaska. So where is the problem there?

most 21 year old kids don't own pistols. very few I knew did. we all owned were rifles and such. My point is if start off with letting staff carry if permitted. I guess it would be ok for 21 or older to carry if they are permitted but my points is to work in a direction. the moment the law is changed and something happens the pee in their pants crowds will fight to roll back carry ability.

there are 2 trains of thought, the gradual movement in a direction or the drastic shift. both have their good and bad points but at this point. In a college atmosphere full of left wing ideologs you will never get a carry for all policy passed off the bat, you will have to move in a direction gradually so stats can overcome narrative

It's obvious that we need more laws & regulations! We should outlaw rape & people hanging out in parking garages! Then this would have never happened!

My wife is on the safety committee at <insert name here> college and I told her they should invest in some Rape-Buster signs to go along with the Gun-Buster signs as that would solve the problem. Fortunately for me she laughed. :)

Fortunately I had my yearly Good Idea and suggested using Work Study money to hire students to work as escorts for the night classes etc. A radio and a armband isn't much but beats walking alone. Course since Barney is 65 and weighs 275 it would take 45 minutes for help to arrive but hey it's better than nothing.

I bought my first gun ever on my 21st birthday. I was not brought up around guns. Never held one until Navy boot camp. Got my Virginia CCL soon after. Guess what? I had no problems with the responsibility of owning and carrying a gun. I didn't start shooting people whenever I got mad or upset. Secondly, if a young person can't handle the responsibility of carrying, chances are that they aren't the gun type and aren't going to bother with it to begin with, so it renders your point rather moot.

I also do not get the age thing. Time most people are in college, they are old enough to vote, old enough to die in the army via the draft, old enough to star in an "adult" film, have driven a car for 2+ years, and are just a couple of years from getting a job and being a "normal" adult. They are old enough to be legally responsible for their actions. There is no reason a student with a CCW permit (or not, in the states that allow it) should be unable to carry their weapon. There is every reason why they should be able to carry it, as this sorry incident shows.

What is the fear? The same fear that people have when anyone has a gun: the person may get mad and shoot someone, the person cannot be trusted, there may be drugs or booze at XYZ location, there will be shootouts in the streets between rival drunk frat houses, there will be accidents, and so on. The list of imagined problems never ends. But no one protests the rights of students to have cars, which are proven to cause deaths on a regular basis, are often used in crimes, are often abused by intoxicated people, and so on. At the end of the day, there is nothing that can be said about a gun on campus that cannot be said about a car on campus --- some idiot could drive through the crowd lined up to buy football tickets, after all, and kill a lot of people in just a few seconds. None of the reasons for denial of weapons to permit holders make any sense (Yes, I include govt buildings, court, school, airports, and the rest of it) when you look at it from the "car" perspective.

And on the opposite side of the spectrum I got my first rifle at 8, shotgun at 10 and pistol at 12 for Christmas. I kept all 3 in my room and had ammo and everything. It is a wonder that all of my friends didn't die...

Like Bkelm18 said it is all about respect and maturity. My dad took a shotgun out back and blew a watermelon to pieces when I was about 6 or 7. He told me that a person's head would look just like that if I ever shot someone. Maybe a little over dramatic but it made an indelible impression. Yes, you learn to handle your emotions as you get older (most people anyway) but I've got friends in their 40's and 50's that I won't let touch any of my firearms while my son got his first shotgun at 12 and kept it in his room.

Age is not even close to the only factor in responsible gun ownership

Anybody here know anybody that has written or called our congressmen? I honestly haven't myself, but I am getting really tired of this point being brought up year after year and incident after incident all over the country. It will never make sense to me why people are more afraid of guns than that suspicous or shifty person. Last time I checked you can do alot of harm to fellow classmates/faculty/staff with scissors or even a pencil. That being said, when the bad guy comes in with a gun those scissors actually wont make me feel that safe when its all i have. My liberal neighbors have never been scared of me shooting them from my property, but maybe i might just get more violent at schoo....
