Hide yo kids, hide yo wife! Black panthers in Middle TN!

Recommended Posts

Domestic cats can get big. Some of you have seen our "big" cat. He can easily be mistaken for a bobcat except for the long tail because of his size. He is 17 pounds and has about 2" of fur on him as well making him look very big.

If people are seeing a large black cat it is a domestic that is probably larger than normal and the witness is having issues determining distance. I suspect if someone shoots one of these black panthers then a neighbor will have probably lost a pet.

Or maybe it is this. With all the bigfoot hysteria and the marketing and money associated with it maybe a group of people are trying break into the "biz" of mythical creatures. If they get researchers in the area it will no doubt bring in revenue.

Black panthers in the US arent unheard of and there have been confirmed reports. Most of which are beleived to be the result of people illegally owing them as pets. Also jaguars are still native to some of the more southern regions of the US and it isnt impossible for a few to have migrated up this far (although highly unlikely), back in the late 1700s jaguars were fairly common in america and were as far north east as Pensylvania. The most recent confirmed jaguar sigtings i think were all from Arizona. Again if it is real its probably an escaped illegal pet, but there is the possibility that it is real.

I think if it's black, it's probably someone's escaped "pet". If it's tan, then it could just be passing through, like the one up in Connecticut last summer.

Again, a black cougar (mountain lion, puma) is totally undocumented. Ever. In it's entire range from Canada to South America.

The only large black cats ever known are melanistic leopards, tigers, and jaguars.

There's really no such thing as a "panther"; it's just colloquial usage from the genus name Panthera; here and there, it was further bastardized to "painter".
