I'm going to be vacationing in a cabin in a few weeks. I have my carry license in Indiana and plan on carrying my pistol where allowed. But, I would like to bring a long gun with me to have in the cabin and go to a shooting range. Am I correct it is fine to do this as long as it's unloaded and secure for the trip?

As long as one is not in the chamber you are legal in TN with your carry permit. Secure in the seat next to you (not recomending that) trunk where ever. As long as one is not in the pipe unless needed for self defense you are good to go.

I believe you are incorrect... he stated he has an Indiana carry license, in which Tennessee honors that license just like it would it's own. He can carry, according to Tennessee law, and have a loaded firearm on his person or in his vehicle.

Edit: I just realized he was speaking of a long gun, not a handgun. Lime the previous poster mentioned, with a valid out of state permit, you can have magazine loaded, chamber empty long guns in the vehicle. Handguns, you can have one in the chamber.

Sorry for the mixup, totally my fault.

No, he's correct. Tennessee code states that you can have a rifle/shotgun in the vehicle (loaded) but without a round in the chamber (amber status). Pistols are fine for having one in the pipe, but not rifles/shotguns.

Here is the Statute

39-17-1307. Unlawful carrying or possession of a weapon.

(e) (1) It is an exception to the application of subsection (a) that a person authorized to carry a handgun pursuant to § 39-17-1351 (your permit) is transporting a rifle or shotgun in or on a privately-owned motor vehicle and the rifle or shotgun does not have ammunition in the chamber. However, the person does not violate this section by inserting ammunition into the chamber if the ammunition is inserted for purposes of justifiable self-defense pursuant to § 39-11-611 or § 39-11-612.

Thanks everyone!! Here in Indiana we can have it ready to rock and it's fine. I had read the statute but it was unclear to me. Better safe than sorry, the Mrs. would be pretty mad if I spend most of our vacation behind bars... lol.

This law makes no sense to me. Why can't you have one in the chamber in a car, in a long arm? In my mind, a long arm is pretty much useless in the close confines of a car any way.

You will need to ask our overseers in Nashville.

Personally, I think driving around with a loaded rifle is a pretty dumb thing to do.
