Can you extend any 870 magazine or any one except the express? What about the Mossberg? Can you extend the magazine on a 500 or 590? I want a high capacity 8+1 or 9+1 capacity shotgun for home defense. I'm not trying to start a Mossberg vs Remington thread, but these are questions I have. HELP!!! I also want one chambered for 3" not just 2.75" which one am I looking at? What about the Remington 11-87? Is that an expensive, but doable option? Input please. Thanks

Mossberg 500s are not extendable, for sure... you'd have to buy a longer mag-tube and a different barrel to fit over it. I'm sure that one could extend a 590, but most 590s already hold 8+1, and the mag is flush with the end of the barrel.

Remember that the higher the capacity means a longer gun, if you choose a shotgun which is really long, you might have some issues dealing with corners and tight hallways.

A Saiga S-12 would be an excellent option, you can get 10rd magazines in an 18" bbl gun.

You can extend a 870 Express, just requires grinding down a couple pieces inside the tube with a dremel.

If you alter the magazine tube on your Remington, you will void any warranty.

Used 870 Police shotguns are readily available. I will bet Rabbi or Hero Gear can hook you up.

Who need a stinkin warranty

Just picked up a catalogue from ATI (ATIGUNSTOCKS.COM) and they show extensions for Remingtons. From pics it looks like they just screw on the end of stock tube. Minimum barrel length for 7 shot is 18.5 " and 20" for the eight shot. $23.50 is the MSRP. Hope this helps.

You have to grind down two small bumps inside the existing tube. The only way you could remove that alteration would be to weld enough material back on to recreate the bumps...but it would be pretty obvious and worth more trouble than the cost of the gun.

Remington has models of the 870 with extended tubes. It would be cheaper to buy one of those than a 870 and then a tube. Also I am sure those models have a 3 inch chamber but unless you have shot 3 inch mags beware they kick like a damn mule and would make followup shots slower.
