Two lawmakers push to eliminate gun background checks for more than 300k Tennesseans | TriCities.com

Two area lawmakers are pushing for a bill that would eliminate gun background checks for more than 300,000 Tennesseans and that has the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation concerned.

Senator Steve Southerland is sponsoring the legislation in the Tennessee Senate and representative David Hawk is doing the same in the house.

Under the proposal, people with valid handgun carry permits won't need to pass background checks in order to buy guns. Gun carriers already have to pay $115, pass an intensive background check and get fingerprinted in order to get their permits.

Southerland tells us they shouldn't have to pay an extra $10 for another background check every time they buy a new gun.

I agree with this, but I don't have a lot of faith that it will go anywhere. That's too much revenue for the gubmit to lose.

Nah, this'll go. They WANT that $10. If they average just one gun purchase per permit holder per year that's 300,000 x 10 = 3,000,000 They are not going to give that away.

I hope it passes, I always thought it should be that way. I think in a few states it is, but will, probably never happen here, they will lose all that revenue. Not that every permit holder buys a gun every year, then there are some of us that will buy more than one. Like myself this year I know there are at least three that I want.

I agree with this and hope it passes. Makes perfect sense...not that that matters.

It's not easy (dang near impossible) to repeal or eliminate a program that makes money for them. Dead.

It would probably make them more money if they did this. From what I understand, in the states that don't require background checks for permit holders, permits have to be renewed every year, instead of every 4 years. Therefore, in 4 years they are getting $200, and I'd be willing to wager that most permit holders don't buy 5 guns a years. At least not from dealers.

They'd make more by adding another 2 or 3 cents a box to the dime they already charge for ammo, just designate it for TBI instead of the TWRA.

I'd be afraid that they require that HCPs be renewed every year, though...

Which states do this?

I see nothing in this proposed legislation that requires TDOS or TBI to conduct yearly background checks on HCP holders. I believe that is required for the ATF to accept our permit as an alternative to a NICS check.

10+ years ago, Georgia didn't require background checks for HCP holders. I don't know if it has changed or not. HCP's were also good for 5 years and cost less than TN. That may have changed due to state economic conditions.

When I lived in North Carolina this is how it was and I never heard of any problems because of it. I really like this idea but I really hate the slanted article the OP posted, hard to find media that will give us a fair shake though.

Don't give them any ideas!
