Firearms Insurance?

Odd: I just did a quote for $10,000 of firearms insurance, and the premium was not affected by whether I had "safeguards" or not. The price was still $71 annually.

If remember correctly the additional $$ for no safeguards only kicks in at a certain coverage dollar amount.

Yeah, I asked and they said it only kicks in at $30,000. Since I was getting $10,000 it didn't matter. Still, $71 versus $300 from my homeowner's insurance is a no-brainer.

The safeguard credits do not kick in until you reach a limit of 30,000 or more.

Early last week, after reading this post, I contacted my local State Farm agent. I was interested in a $15K in coverage. Today, they quoted me $300 for a special rider. This seems high, advice? I have large Cannon safe, bolted through the floor with 3/4 case hardened bolts with a steel plate in the crawl space with the bolts welded to the steel plate. They would have to torch the safe to open it.

My cost was knocked down considerably because of not just my safe but also because of my monitored security system.

I'm not going to say how much coverage I have but it's more than $15K and my annual cost per thousand of coverage is considerably less than yours...in fact, $300/$15,000 is nearly double my rate.

I should probably also add that in addition to my home, I also have two vehicles insured with the same company; I suspect that plays into it as well.

I do too, but that didn't matter to Liberty Mutual. They told me to jump on the $71 I got through the other place.

I did some shopping around two months ago. Farmers didn't offer additional coverage. State Farm offered additional coverage with some bonuses. Their base offering that comes with the home owner's policy covered fire or theft at home only. The extra coverage additionally handled things like firearms walking off at the range when you turn your back for a moment. I haven't heard of it happening but they claimed to cover it. Another thing about State Farm was their additional coverage was only good on firearms and not accessories. If an AR walked off, it is covered but not its scope. I couldn't get a feel for exactly where they drew the line.

I have Farm Bureau and the most gun coverage you can have is $4000. That's with me paying $50 a year extra. I believe the basic homeowner's policy only allows $1500 for guns and knives and the rest was extra. My agent recommended that I check into the Arms Care Plus insurance that is available through the NRA. I did, and it's a good deal imo. I'm going to drop the extra coverage on my homeowners policy now that I am adequately covered through Arms Care.

I will say that I am not too happy with Farm Bureau right now. They recently added a couple clauses to my policy that ticked me off, and also raised my deductable and premium. One of the clauses they just hit me with states that "Personal liability and medical payments to others coverage provided by this policy shall not provide protection for any claims or damages arising from or in connection with any dog(s)/canine(s) owned by or in the care, custody or control of any insured person."

I have had Farm Bureau for 17 years and this is the first time this clause has been put on my policy. Heck, I have a friggin' farm for gosh sakes! I have dogs....8 of them. This is BS and I will be looking for another insurance company for my homeowners insurance immediately. I just got my new policy in the mail last week, so I haven't really had the time to look into other insurance companies yet.

Does anyone know of a good company to go to when you own a farm with land and livestock (just two horses at the moment) that will cover everything sufficiently?

BTW, the Arms Care insurance that I purchased does not require that your guns be itemized or scheduled unless they are individually worth over $10,000 (I believe that was the amount anyway).....and accessories (holsters, mags, cases, slings, etc.) that go with each firearm that is claimed as part of your loss is covered as well. Also, "ammunition, bayonets, knives, binoculars, hunting glasses, and spotting scopes" are not covered.

can I get a link to your insurance company? Is it through the nra? Sorry I did not see your first post. I am going to give them a try. Just for the extra piece of mind. Thanks Edited by swim615

I just got 10K from State Farm on guns, and yeah, it was $200 per year. My renter's insurance is limited to $2500 on firearms, which adds to the 10K to make 12.5K, and I guess the NRA one is still $2500 too.

However, I knocked back total renter's coverage to 50K and was also able to reduce both of my cars' policy because I drive so little anymore, so that my total payments per year on all policies only increased by about 35 clams.

Hey everyone, I need to re-visit this topic.  I recently received a soliciting email through the NRA, and I have ran the numbers, and this doesn't sound to bad.  Is there anyone here that uses them?  More importantly, anyone ever had a claim, and how did it go?  Is there any way to investigate customer ratings on this underwriter?

I know nothing about the company, but if they are up to snuff, that's not too terribly bad. Guess if NRA is behind it, bound to be ok?

But it's higher than my State Farm policy.

I'm paying  $198/yr for extra $10K for guns (on top of $2500 firearm coverage max on regular renter's policy).

10K worth would cost me more there: $140

I guess higher coverage would be similar too, but don't know.

I'd check with your regular insurer first to compare, see what a personal articles add on policy would run.
