If you had 700 dollars to spend on a rifle, what would it be and why?

ok...Here are some options. If you like lever actions, why not go with a Browning BLR? i had one in a 308 and loved it. Stupid decision to sell it. i love 308. i also like the 7mm08. its a wicked round. I know the BLR barrel maybe somewhat shorter but really, get used to it, buy good ammo, and you will be accurate enough to kill game at long range. Your right as well...its hard to beat a 700.

Now I also want .308 of some sort, been thinking about trying to find an old Remington 788. I have always heard that they are some pretty darn accurate rifles for the money. Not the most beautiful, but are cheap and accurate. Could always buy a different stock for it and probably still not have a ton in it.

.

my uncle took a Remington 788 on trade back in the 80's when he had a small used car lot. Him not being a hunter, when I got a little older he made me a heck of a deal on it. Most of the ones I have seen are pretty pain, However the stock on mine is somewhat unique. At least I havent seen one like it before. It's a good looking gun but the accuracy is AWESOME!!! the longest kill i have ever made was with this rifle....with a cheapy scope on it!

General purpose rifle that would be good for intermediate to longer distances, remington 700 sps in 300 winmag. They are at dicks sporting goods in memphis for 500. You could get a decent scope with the money left over. They come equipped with an adjustable trigger and bull barrel. Got one and can reach out and touch you very easily at 500 yards

800 yards is a good haul. A 1" group is going to be 10" at 1000 yards. Lever guns are fairly short range, because of the calibers they come in. I like them too. I have a Marlin 30/30 that I've never shot, but I sure like playing with it :-). I think it's about a 200 yard gun with the old round nose ammo, and you can push it to 300 with the Hornady stuff.

My lever action 308 argues with you. I have not tried it at 800 but its all one hole at 200, the longest range I can do "easily". Browning makes it, and with a magazine you can use any type of ammo. If you want a lever gun, I highly recommend this one. Bolt guns work too, 30-06, 308, 7mm, and many other great long range calibers in bolt guns. A semi-auto at that range does not exist at that price. Remember to save $$ for a scope!

The Browning is an exception. I was talking about real lever guns. One hole at 200 yards? My X-Bolt won't do that, at least not with factory ammo.

My X-Bolt, or Jonnin's BLR? I just have the Hunter.

Don't get me wrong on the BLR either. That is one really cool rifle. It just doesn't work like a traditional lever gun. That's why it comes in some serious calibers.

Right, when's the last lever action you seen in .300 Win Mag?;)

I've got a ton of Remmy 700s but in the let year I've added 5 Savages and find them to have the most accuracy out of the box without any added expense or mods. They have changed the way I have looked at my 700s.

I do not think it has been mentioned, so I will give it a nod. I love my Winchester model 70. I have had a couple of them in 30-06, and they have been great shooters. The last deer I shot with one was at about 225 yrds, and she dropped like a rock. As far as hunting, unless you are in a bean field in west tn or something, you are most likely not going to have shots much over that.

With that said, I will also say that the next rifle I buy will be a Ruger scout rifle in .308. Other than that, the next bolt gun will probably be a model 70 in about a .300 mag or something.
