Anyone shot one yet? I'm thinking of one of these over a gas-piston AR.

I've got the non folding version of the Sig 556. It shoots very well. I ran 200 or so rounds of dirty Wolf steel cased junk through it with only 1 or 2 problems.

I want that folding stock in black for my Sig.

Here is the one I am watching:

Pretty sweet. I've handled the "optics ready" version. But this new one has side folder, red dot, and back-up irons. AK-type piston. Basicly AR controls (- charging handle). I think this might be my final rifle to buy before the "big ban".

I don't know where you're located, but Guns and Leather (Greenbrier TN) had one on the rack for 1600

They gave me, and a couple other guys a 30 minute demonstration about this weapon.

You mean that Bushy w/ all those Magpul goodies? Haha, I like the ACR too, but I've had a thing for bullpups lately. ACR should be +/- 1500? So, thats a pretty good deal for such a full featured rifle, I just hope it makes it to the market before my tax refund magically dissapears...

Thanks for the tip on Guns&Leather. I need to check them out. It's been a few years since I've stopped by. Great folks there.

The one at guns and leather has green furnature. The folding/telescoping stock assembly appears to be Magpul and the forearm is 550 (or a very good copy). If you think about the basic rifle at about $1,100, then add $550.00 for the furnature, the price isn't that far off.

I purchased my "Holo" version very reasonably, I felt ($1,200). At first blush the rear stock is a POS. Upon close examination, this initial impression is confirmed. It's wobbly, the lockup is poor and once I got it home... into the trash it went. I used the Holo sight once and, after a little research, sold it for $50.00 (to a member of this forum, if memory serves).

Although I prefer the looks of the 550 handguard over that of the 556, I opted to keep the 556 handguard for 2 reasons: 1. The rail was handy for mounting my Harris bi-pod with use of an A.R.M.S. rail adapter and 2. I had a chance to shoot a real 550 some years back when they first imported them (1992, 93?), and that handguard heats up rapidly -- perhaps this is why Sig put fins on the 556 guard.

I found the rifle very accurate out of the box. With LC 55 gr. ball it produced 2.5-3.0 MOA groups, but with LC 62 gr groups shrunk to 1.25-1.75MOA, while BlackHills 68gr. brought it consistantly 1.0MOA, with frequent submoa groups. With a 1:7 twist rate, my experience was to be expected.

Other than the furnature and the iron sights, I have only one additional complaint. There is no brass deflector and within a few dozen rounds the receiver just behind the ejection port begins to mar as the expelled brass bounces off it. Within a few hundred rounds, the finish in that area is gone.

Others I have talked to that have these rifles have taken to affixing a velcro strip or layers of electrical tape to this area to prevent damage to the finish. I have opted not to as I anticipate refinishing and rebarreling the rifle at a future date.

Since I don't need a lootandshoot version of another rifle, I put mine together with the idea of doing some varminting. Eventually I'd like to replace the barrel with a heavy barrel as found on the 550-S.

I've got one and I really like it. I've put several hundred rounds through it without a hiccup. That includes some 62gr Barnaul Russian stuff that it ate like candy. Yeah, the finish behind my ejection port is worn away. Oh well. B)

After trying a Bushnell Trophy red dot sight, I opted for a Trijicon TriPower reflex sight that I really like as well. The comments on the stock are correct and I may swap it out with a Magpul CPR like the SWAT version has. I just ordered a couple more of the SIG polymer mags that snap together for it. Otherwise, AFAIC, it's darn near perfect.

I have a couple of AR lowers I bought as a hedge on the election, but after shooting a friend of mine's AR this weekend, I'm having second thoughts about building them out. I like my 556 that much.
