Academy Sports experience (Not good).

I was very excited about Academy opening since it's very convienently located for me. My biggest griped is the trigger locks on all the guns. It's hard for me to get an idea of the "feel" of a gun without knowing where my finger falls on the trigger. I don't plan to buy any guns there, but they seem to be a pretty good option for ammo.

RE"" …I put it in my youngest boys arms and he says he needs to keep it pointed behind the counter. Im like the counter is about 4' tall. Its will cause him to be pointing too high to get a feel. So I just turn him around to let him point down an empty isle. …"

You ignore his request (to keep the gun pointed behind the counter), then expect him to be at your beck and call?

Be comforted that on his FaceBook/Twitter page, he is probably complaining about you… "This guy comes in and tells his nine year-old to point a gun out into the store after I clearly told him to keep it pointed safely behind the counter…"

Well if you would have bothered to read all the posts you would have seen my clarification post. I used a poor choice of words. No where did I say I turned around and pointed into the store. I said I pointed down an "isle" which is more like a walkway. No customers there. Still at the back wall just not behind the counter. The guy was ok with where I had him pointing. That was not the point of the story. I even said in hindsight I should have probably took a few steps back and pointed over the counter. Again, he was ok where I was pointing. So, if you feel the need to post in someone else's post, please read all of the posts so you will have a better understanding of the story and not go in half cocked. Better yet,why not offer up some helpful and useful advice. That is what these forums are for isn't it? There are a lot of different experience levels on here. Shoot safe.

I think the lesson to be learned here is that you can't really expect a lot of expertise at a gun counter in a large "box" store; even one that caters to "sports"...you may get experience and expertise but you probably won't find it very often.

The other lesson is that good "customer service" is hard to come by and it seems to be in smaller and smaller supply the bigger the store.

Years ago, in the book "In Search of Excellence", the author noted (paraphrasing here obviously) that "anybody can give excellent customer service; but few do".

On a purely personal note, while I might look at a firearm in a big store like Academy, etc....when it comes time to buy, I think it important that firearm enthusiasts support the local stores dedicated to supporting us and our passion/sport/hobby. :biglol:

I read all the posts before commenting. I just addressed the relevant parts.

  • He gave you an instruction.
  • You blatantly ignored it and did what you thought was best.
  • You then complained publicly about his attitude.
  • Don't play by his rules, don't expect to be treated like a preferred customer.

I merely pointed out a possible reason the clerks blew you off. It was likely because you blew them off first.

Actually, yes, I feel invited to "post in someone else's post" when that someone joins a public forum and asks for input about his experience with Academy Sports. Accusing people of "going off half-cocked" when you have a grand total of 8 posts on this forum is a terrific way to get started here…

You want advice?

OK.

Treat people the way you want to be treated.

I've found the staff at the Rivergate located Academy, if not always knowledgeable, at least to be very kind and eager to assist.

I have had the same experience at Cool Springs.

When we went on opening day it was packed to say the least.. I noticed some of the people by the gun counter when they where talking about firearms to not be the most informed or knowlegable people .. I think that comes with years of handling firearms.. BUT they might have been good sales people in a different setting..

I wont shop there anyway.. prices are to high for my taste.

FWIW.. if someone comes into my shop( if I had one) and they cannot follow MY rules or shop rules.. they would be asked to kindly find the door to the outside.its really simple..

The sales person also could have handled it better .. he could has said.. come behind the counter and aim it that way or the other way to let teh kids get a somewhat accurate feel for it.. I think both both sides could have handled better

Again, and for the last time. Yes he gave me an instruction to aim behind the counter. When I handed my son the rifle the counter was too high for him to aim over. When I told him this and then turned him 45 degrees still towards the back of the store, Just not directly behind the salesman. Again, the salesman was fine with this. That was not the issue . Maybe I didn't convey this well enough. My fault. To say I blatantly ignored his request is greatly presumptuous on your part. So for the record, where my son was aiming was not an issue for me or the clerk.

Yes you should feel invited to post in a public forum. You are correct there. It would also help if your post was helpful or informative. Or even if it were to disagree. Your reply was neither. You took the opportunity to be sarcastic and snide. You say making a the comment of "going off half cocked" is a great way to get started with only 8 posts. Well your comments on my 8th post was a fine how do you do to a newcomer also, weren't they? Read your on advice. "Treat people the way you want to be treated". No where did I claim to be gun saavy and all knowing. That's why I am here. To learn and to gain some useful knowledge. With over a 1000 posts obviously you have some experience and knowledge to offer. Why not when you read a post by a newcomer that don't sound quite right, offer some pointers and helpful tips. With that being said, no hard feelings. If your ever up this way lets get together and go shoot. I would like to have all the helpful advice I can get. Just remember at one point you were just starting out to. I am big enough to say that if my comment was unwarranted then I apologize. Shoot safe. Darrell
