Ya'll probably all know this (I know the admins know about it), but one or more east european companies sell rather sophisticated spam software. It is smart enough to sign up automatically to some forums and do its daily spam ritual, inserting ads in already-existing threads. If a forum security is tighter, it will automatically sign up til it hits a snag then alert the operator for quick human intervention to complete the sign-up. Then it will automatically spam that forum as all the others, until its account gets blocked.

Some of the softwares or operators try to be "considerate" by programming the spambot to only spam off-topic forums. They would be more considerate just to cease and desist entirely.

I help administer the company website and the spambots are so dang annoying. Some days on our site it will be like a whack-a-mole game killing off spam accounts and clearing messages. Seems to go in cycles. Maybe the spambots share a database of forums that quickly delete their messages, and eventually learn to stop trying if a site promptly kills their spam? Dunno. Was just trying to think of a reason it might run in busy and slack cycles.
