Ruger 10-22 Mod Question

I'm thinking about taking my plain jane 10-22 and putting a new barrel and stock on it. Then doing some internal mods(trigger, etc). Anybody here have any recommendations on which barrel and stock to start with?

Best place to buy parts for a 10-22?

Green Mountain or E R Shaw barrels are good and affordable. I think theGreen mountain ones are kind of hard to find right now though. I have a Boyd's stock that I like pretty well. Check out the RimfireCentral forum for vendors and info. Great place.

I've heard the light weight barrels can warp when hot. Any experience with them?

I have a hogue overmold stock on mine. It is a high quality item and it fits great. It can be had for standard or bull barrel profiels. It is the way to go IMHO.

The stock just depends on what you are doing and what fits you best. Kind of a personal preferance thing. I like and have both.

As far as the barrel I have a friend with the Buttler Creek carbon fiber barrel (has the worst reputation of any of them) and it does fine. I have a heavy tapered stainless and fluted aluminum and either of those are good too. I wouldn't worry a bit about a sporster barrel either. It really depends on what you want to do with the gun.

I'm also in the beginning stages of a Custom 10/22. it didn't take long to realize this wasn't going to be any cheap feat. If I already had a stainless 10/22, I'd probably start with that, but because I don't, I'm just gonna start from scratch. From the looks of it, nobody ever does just a little modifying.

As someone already suggested, go to RimFireCentral.Com. They are very helpful, and have tons of vendors.

I wouldn't recommend the one I mentioned for target shooting. POI does change slightly but not by very much. Be fine for shooting cans and squirrels but not tiny holes in paper. Sorry if I was unclear on that.

Green Mountain for the barrel. Pick a stock that most accurately fits what kind of shooting you want to do. Hogue Overmolded stock if you want something for hunting, good wooden stock for bench shooting.

Guys, thanks for all the insight. A standard type stock would probably work fine, but the thumbhole stocks sure look cool.

I suck at polishing so I gingerly did the top o' the bolt. Nothing done to the trigger group yet, because (a) no money, and ( don't mind the pull/creep/overtravel right now. It is next on the list though.

I wanted a cool woodstock at first. Then I held one of these and it fit me better. The rifle doesn't look like a 10/22 anymore, and I like that. Its heavier, more accurate, and more fun.

That being said, I'm going to be another one soon, and make it lighter, with lightweight aluminum barrel, etc.

10/22's are fun, and its my version of EBR disease.

dont let not having a stainless gun stop you, Rugers "SS" recievers are actually painted or anodized silver. strip it and polish with sandpaper and alot of elbow grease, then clear coat it to match barrel

and fet ready, you will spend $$$$$ on ammo to try to find what shoots best in it after rebuild and mods. its crazier than hot rods

Mine's got a green mtn bull with a Hogue overmolded stock on it. Not fancy by any means, but it's a tackdriver.

Just got the new stock on mine. I still need to finish up a couple small things like bedding the stock and putting a sling stud on for the bipod, but it is mostly complete.

Atomemphis, that is awesome. I just picked up a used 10/22 not to long ago, and all I have done so far is strip the factory stock and refinish myself, and mount a cheap 3x9x40 tasco on top. I am looking at maybe getting another stock, just haven't made my mine up yet. I really like yours.....where did you get it?

any decent rimfire scope $30-$120

You can expect easy 1/4" - 1/2" 50 yard groups all day long. Not best of the bunch groups that stupid magazines boast about to make guns sound better than they are...these are real world groups! That is very, very good for a semi-auto rimfire for under $400 out the door.

I have a nifty BKL technologies 'unitized' scope rings, and the standard (factory provided) rail. Got it from Sinclair industries after waiting far too long with another vendor.

There are all-in-ones at one of the RimfireCentral sponsors that look good.

I have been thinking about getting myself a 10/22 to set it up so I can shoot with my wife...so far, I've run across a few interesting modifications...

Carbon Fiber is neat - I believe that's what it is from a cursory glance, but there are some issues to be aware of:

1.) Very Light.

2.) Very Strong.

3.) Very Brittle

4.) Poor Heat Transfer Properties

We use these kind of parts a lot with motorcycles at the shop I go to, and they are incredible. The dreamiest upgrade to any bike (even Harley's: The VRod) is Carbon Fiber wheels. You accelerate, brake, and corner better. Its the top-notch thing to have, and not a fad as others had predicted.

But the heat transmission properties make me think that if you are interested in having a one-ragged-hole-@-distance type of gun, this may be problematic. I understand that this is contrary to the advertisement by the manufacturer.

I guess I'll go with the standard fluted barrel then...I'm not spending 200+ dollars on a barrel with the possibility of it being crap.
