Some would call this disrespectful, I call it upholding your values.

Good for him. I would decline it too.

Outstanding! A man of conviction and character who will act according to his stated beliefs...and do it publically. In spite of possible backlash from the liberal community in his home.:)

One might argue that he had the perfect opportunity to discuss his issues with the man in charge, but chickened out.

But I seriously doubt there would have been any meaningful discussion. The handlers would never allow that to happen, especially with the media following the team around.

So Obama would completely change everything based on a discussion with a goalie? Nah. If you fundamentally disagree with someone, they won't change their mind and you'll only frustrate yourself by talking it over.

I'm surprised the white house (any president) doesn't get more-frequent turn-downs. Or maybe there are a lot of turn-downs and we don't hear about them. Or maybe a lot of people turn it down politely claiming scheduling conflict or whatever?

Or maybe I'm unusually non-social. It is a zero probability I'd ever get a white house invite, but would probably have turned down invites from most of em. Maybe would quote a real high consulting fee, and go if they sign the consulting contract. It would be a whole lot of BS to go thru, visiting the WH and dealing with people not especially savory or likeable.

I wonder if he'll get audited by the IRS this year...

While I support his position, I understand why his team (and even the fans) might take offense. He's not invited there for his political beliefs or to somehow promote the President, he's there to represent his team/city. Not a big deal in the grand scheme, but I can understand how folks might be upset at his decision.

I think I'd be a little pissed if the Preds got an invite to the White House while Bush was in office and one of the players refused to go because he was a flaming liberal... ya know?

^^^^This ^^^^

His beliefs first, a man of conviction, he has garnered a certain amount of respect from me through actions alone.
