My mom has a lady smith and she bought new maybe 8 years ago. She cleans it and oils it regularly. What is this black tarnish or corrosion? I think it may be from the wood grip, but not sure. Any ideas of how to get rid of it?

It has a clear coat covering all the metal. My 637 didn't turn black it just started

peeling. I have had it four years. It has probably 50 rounds trough it and has set in the factory case all the time. I have not contacted S&W about it. I have not had much luck with the factory in the past.

I kinda get the feeling the factory doesn't care. I was really interested in getting a J frame airweight, but I'm not getting one if this can happen.

To me it looks like the wood finish is bleeding on the metal.I would probably remove the grips and buff it out

I would recommend forwarding those pictures to S&W's customer service department. I have had nothing but excellent experiences with them.

It'll buff out.

I don't think I would try to buff this out. The finish on this gun is not brushed or buffed, but appears to be glass beaded. If you buff through the clear coat, then it will be difficult to match the finish on the rest of the gun. This almost looks as if the discoloration needs to be glass beaded, then the entire frame re-coated.

Call S&W and send them some pics. These guns do have a lifetime warranty, and S&W is usually great to service what they sell.

Honestly, before I did anything else, I would try a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. I have used those on many things around the house, metal included, and have been amazed at the results.

I emailed S&W. They said they would send a prepaid postage sticker and refinish the gun. This is first time I have ever dealt with Smith & Wesson, but I am very happy with their customer service.

Mine hasn't started discoloring on the frame (Hogue styler rubber grips might be the difference) but I note that the trigger on that one is "gunky" like the one on my 642. I would like to buff that trigger but have never cracked the frame open and basically I'm afraid to do so.

Anyone got any solutions to get the trigger cleaned up on these models?

I love the little gun but have not loved that trigger which always looks dirty to me.

I can scrape the finish off my 340 with a fingernail.. I kinda wish it was all gone because the scandium/aluminum underneath is pretty.

If they are refinishing guns for free though, I might take them up on that.

I've been thinking of trying to find a 60LS for my wife, but when I saw this I was about to change my mind. With the way they are handling taking care of it, I think I'll keep looking for one. Thanks for the info.

StrickJ, Jimenez is a decent gun for the money. The trigger needs a little slickin', but i've done a few of those, pretty easy actually. Like I said, decent gun for the price.

RightWinger, If you 642 is a newer model, S&W made them to be that way, Brownells sells a trigger spring kit that helps witth the pull, polish the rebound block, leave everything else alone, and it will help with your trigger.

Don't know what year it was made but it was bought last fall so I will assume 06 or 07 model. Why on earth would they design or produce it to look dirty??

Looking at that schematic on Brownells, looks like I could mess this up pretty quick with all the small pins and parts ! May just let Sam at Custom Gun Shop have a bit more work.

You mean based on the fact that they paid postage and said they would refinish the gun?

Based on the fact that it seems lots of people complain about the finishes on their airweight revolvers.

My model 637 is doing something similar on the backstrap. They do have clearcoat problems and S&W will stand by their warranty but it may do it again so be warned. I think I am going to beadblast and duracoat black leaving the cylinder titanium.
