Anybody watch the SOTU?

Recommended Posts

One thing I did notice several times was a foreshadowing of his intention of campaigning against the congress. It will be interesting to see how successfull he is with that strategy.

One other thing I found interesting was when he said that he will continue to do things, under the guise of fixing the economy, with or without congress. His hubris is appalling.

To some of you older members, was the arrogance and power hungry nature of the Nixon administration anything like what it is currently? Obama comes across to me as a very dangerous demagogue.

I think that's a very good question. I wasn't paying the kind of attention to politics then as I do now, but I don't think Nixon was quite as bad. Sure he did a lot of things that hacked off the Congress and his rivals, up to and including the Watergate Affair, but I don't think he came anywhere near the sheer meglomania of BHO.

When a sitting president just decides he can do anything he wants without congressional approval, we've reached a whole new level of power grab.

I ignored politics during the Nixon years. I was a much happier guy back then. Don't know why I'm letting it drive me crazy now.

I ignored politics during the Nixon years. ...

I was somewhat of an activist then, but drugs were dirt cheap, so the times were easier to live with. ;)

Though Watergate was disgraceful, not much worse than other presidents have done, just dumber to involve himself with an actual physical burglary like a street thug.

However, I'd take Ole Milhaus over Obama in a heartbeat. Actually, I think Mitt is much like him in some regards, so I may sorta get that chance.

Tatally agree with you mike, but it just seems that as we get older, it's very hard to ignore the insanity around us.

I was wiser back then. I knew that one party would accomplish some of their goals, and I would pay for it. Or, the other party would accomplish some of their goals, and I would pay for it. Hasn't changed, and never will. It's always gonna be on our backs.

Only parts of it as it is a rehash of his positions and sounds very much like a campaign speech. But I rarely listed to any POTUS SOTU speech, not just because this is Pres Obama.

Fer sure. I couldn't stand to listen to Bush, Clinton, Bush or Reagan any better. It would have never occured to me as a realistic option to watch Carter, Nixon, Johnson, etc. Back then it was an automatic reflex to change channels any time a politician would be on TV. As Mike said, maybe we were smarter back then.

Though I did find the interminable months of Nixon hearings on TV to have a morbid fascination.

Right. As I remember it, seemed most of us either wanted to sting him up or just wondered what all the fuss was about. He just was clumsy enough to get caught doing what every other politico before him had done.
