N4JCJ here.

JohnnyFox - Let me know when you get on the air. You're close enough that we can chat on one of the local 2m repeaters.

Alrighty! I was gonna take my test Feb 4th but I have to work. March 4th is the day as of now. Then it's equipment buying time.

I was going to get mine at some point but figured I didn't want to spend a few hundred bucks on a rig I was hardly ever going to use.

You don't have to go expensive. I have a basic Yaesu 2m rig in my truck. I think I have < $200 in the whole setup.

And in response to the original post, yes, I am one of the many hams here on TGO. We actually have a group for ham radio operators. Johnnyfox, good luck with it. It is a great hobby. It can get expensive, but you can also get into it fairly affordably. Like most hobbies, the sky is the limit on how much you could spend.

I actually just got my license last June. Got my Tech in June, my General in July and I am studying for my Extra Class now.

Oh I know but that's still too expensive for my meager interest in the hobby. :ugh: But honestly the only rig I could use in my truck would be one with a detachable faceplate and those cost at least 3 to 400 bucks usually.

Not to mention the myriad of scumbag thiefs that live near me so I would imagine the rig would not last too long.

I have been interested in getting into ham, especially with the amount of bad weather we have around here. Where in West Tennessee can you go to take the test and what does a fella need to study?

You do not need a detachable face, I hid my wife's radio in her console. You can also mount under seat. Extra class here, wife is a tech..

There is no console, and there is no under the seat. Trust me, I would need a detachable faceplate unless I wanted to get in and out of the truck every time I wanted to operate the radio.

I bought a Yaesu 880R from a friend at work for $300. I mounted the radio under the seat with the faceplate mounted to a lido arm bracket. Mounting Solutions For Amateur Radio you just back out a seat bolt for the middle seat and tighten it over this bracket. I ran power through a grommet near the break pedal and fished the carpet to have the radio under the driver seat with no wires exposed. I zip tied the speaker to the bracket arm and have amagnet antenna and used a 3M bracket for the mic that sticks to the dash. It's a very clean install no hole (accept for a small one in the grommet) install. I have a Ford F150 quad cab.
