His being a senator is irrelevant. He deserves the same consideration anybody else gets, no more, no less.

I have been thur the TSA dance in Austin Tx a couple of years after 9/11 and it was actually funny. I requested a woman to search my waistband. The funny part was they would intentionally make the handheld scanner go off to see your reaction. It would have been amusing if it hadn't taken an hour and a half.

He was not "detained"...he was free to leave at any time as far as I can tell; he just wan't allowed past the gate to the ramp.

He just doesn't want to follow the rules that are the natural outgrowth of the laws passed by the body he is part of and that the little people have to follow; if we want to fly. Until he and the rest of Congress starts to dismantle these ridiculous laws they've created I'm not going to wast a moment feeling sorry when one of their own gets entangled in them.

The TSA needs to be dismantled but until they are, you will follow their rules or you won't fly...seems a pretty simple concept to me.

It's a joke, though, to think all these people are griping about TSA stuff because of constitutional grounds. The vast majority just hate idiocy and inconvenience, and couldn't tell you with what the 4th even deals.

It's my understanding that once they start the screening on you, you can't leave. I've heard of folks being arrested for refusing to submit and wanting to leave.

That is correct WWMike. Once screening starts, you must complete it or be arrested.

I've not heard that before or known of it happening - if it has happened (and I'm not saying it hasn't) I suspect there was something more going on that someone simply refusing to be searched by physical contact???

More to the point, I haven't heard anything like that being reported about this incident...what I have heard reported is that he went through the scanner and it showed something that caught the TSA's attention at which point their procedure is to do a pat down which he refused and either left completely on his own and/or was escorted out.

Now...if he really was detained (i.e. not free to leave) then that's different but I haven't seen anything substantive that indicates that.

From the reports, I have heard, he requested to go back thru the scanner. The TSA refused, and required a pat down. The Senator then supposedly pulled out his cell phone and called the Head of the TSA, to request a clarification. This, supposedly, irritated the TSA agents there, who then refused him. Kind of a "respect my authoritah" response.

I just wish it would happen to enough Senators/ House Reps to get the TSA leashed.

The question is, why did he go thru the screening? I thought the Congress gave themselves a free pass to get by the screening.

He was on CNN with Blitzer.

He went through the scanner a second time somewhat later after discussing the matter there, said he had exactly the same things on and carrying exact same things.

Scanner didn't beep. Don't know if it was the same scanner or not.

So he said that it was his opinion that the scanners are set to beep now and then as another type of spot check. Wolf said that they had talked to head of TSA who emphatically denied that was the case. So Rand said then that they must basically suck, so just how reliable are they in general?

Went on to advocate for a frequent flyer type program, where folks could get a security clearance, said it was quite poor that we're 10 years into this and still don't have it.
