I was looking over this old bcd 4 Mauser and found this small hole under the barrel? Why is it there and is this dangerous? It has threads inside the hole.

It is on a thicker part of the barrel and looks no deeper than the thinner profile front end so I would says it's fine.

Is it threaded ? Put a hex head screw in it.

It doesn't look deep enough for a screw. I agree with others. It doesn't look deep enough to effect firing. It looks like bubba started to drill for his own scope mount and chickened out. I would test fire from gun vise a few rounds and no catastrophic failures then carry on. Just MHO.

Appears to be on the bottom of the barrel so my guess is sling Swivel Stud.

Put 60 rounds through it today and my face still looks just as ugly as before so all is good. It does look like this was sporterised at one point and bubba decided to put a sling on it. I would think 60 rounds later no reason to worry.

Find a set screw that fits and red locktite it in there. Preferably one too long for the hole. Tighten it good with plenty of red locktite, then draw file it smooth with the barrel. A dab of permablue with a Qtip and forget you ever seen it.

Kinda looks to me like Bubba tried to install a sling on a sporter stock and drilled a little too deep.
