Hi all -

Recent re-transplant to Memphis. Grew up here but spent the better part of my post high school life in Knoxville, Seattle and Cincinnati (mostly Seattle). Perturbed slightly by the amount of crime especially have lived for a long time smack in the middle of mostly crime free downtown Seattle.

So because of that I just got my first handgun (Ruger SP-101 .357) and I've been having lots of fun. Tried out Rangemaster and RangeUSA in Memphis. RangeUSA is a lot nicer I think but Rangemaster a little closer. MSSA and the place in Millington are just too far from my house so I think those are my only choices.

Looking to get a .22 next for the cheap ammo and have heard they are lots of fun to shoot. Gonna do the permit class as soon as my wife and I can get our schedules aligned. Been shooting very well for a new guy. Years of video games must have helped with the hand eye coordination.

I bought some expensive defense ammo. Didn't mind paying because it was a small quantity. But practice ammo I don't want to pay a lot for. So far I've just been shooting the orange box TN Cartridge stuff sold at the local gun shops and ranges. Cheapest I can find. I've looked at Wal-Mart and some other local places and can't find anything cheaper to practice with. Anyone tried ammoman.com? They have 1000 rds Fed American Eagle 158 gr 38 special lead round nose for $219 delivered. Cheapest I've found anywhere on the web. And slightly cheaper than the orange box stuff. Can anyone tell me if this is sufficient for practice?

I'll keep shooting a little 357 but mostly will shoot 38 spcl for the savings, but I need to find a better source. I'm not ready to get into reloading just yet. Time constraints plus I'm not sure how much I'll be shooting. A lot to start but it may taper over time.

Anyway thanks for any advice you can provide...

Hi neighbor- welcome to TGO. What part of town y'all living in?

I have used ammoman- no problems at all- free shipping, too, on most of their stuff. Another decent one is ammunitiontogo.com and there are a few others.

I'm in the same boat with the local ranges- Rangemaster is much closer- I live near the U of Memphis. But RangeUSA is nicer and isn't clogged with classes as much as is Rangemaster.

Get the permit asap- I did the class with my wife, too. It was a fun date. I am really glad she carries.

You could check out Geaorgia Arms....georgia-arms.com they have certain 38's at a bit over $100 per 500 (mostly lead round nose stuff....so you'll have to scrub a lot). You will have to add shipping charges and see if ordering stuff is still cheaper than buying some lower priced stuff locally.

The Georgia Arms stuff is decent enough to practice with....pretty much ammo is out of control everywhere but you may find a special somewhere....sometimes you can get good deals with CCI blazer stuff...it's alluminum cases so it's not re-loadable and can be a bit cheaper than other stuff.

Welcome to tgo.

If you dont shoot allot then most people get one box of Winchester White box each trip to WalMart. Its adds up quickly and your wallet doesn't notice it as much

I get all my self defense ammo from http://ammunitiontogo.com/catalog1/index.php?cName=pistol-ammo

and usually get my practice ammo from http://www.centerfiresystems.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=12

I'm assuming you have 357sig?also what are you paying for it

No it's a revolver. 357 magnum.

Went to the range this morning. Amazing how fast one can burn through ammo. Shot 25 rds 357 first that I had left over from last week. Then shot 75 rounds 38 special. I much better with the 38 special, obviously. I think I'll get some Hogue grips. They are suppossed to make a world of difference. 357 has some serious kick.

Cleaned the gun this afternoon. It was filthy. I'm not sure exactly if I'm cleaning it right (the cleaning kit instructions left something to be desired).

HEY I shoot at RangeUSA mostly but just joined Memphis Sport Shooting Assoc. In the last few months my dad gave my son a .22 rifle and .22 pistol, and I have purchased a .22 pistol and 4 .22 rifles for me and my kids.
