Blade Length

Recommended Posts

Hey Ya'll,

I looked around the knife forum for an answer to a question I have with no luck. I bought a nice SOG folding knife awhile back and finally decided to check TN knife laws. Basically, other than switch blades, gravity, auto assist, etc., a blade length no longer than FOUR inches.

My question: Where is this measurement taken, the cutting edge or the entire blade to the handle. I ask because the entire blade is a fraction over four inches, and the cutting edge is 3"+. Would any of you know? Thanks!

It's not defined in TCA, but you can be pretty sure most will measure from tip all the way to handle, since only "blade" is used -- "edge" or "sharpened portion" etc is not mentioned.

If it's really close, does SOG spec the blade at 4" or what? If it's marketed as extactly 4" overall bladed knife, I'd print their specs and keep it in wallet and not worry about it.

In a legal scenario where would the manufacturers advertized length be - probably ignored but if I bought it on good faith that it was under 4" shouldn't that mean something.

If for whatever reason you are charged, I doubt they're gonna buy the "but the manufacturer said so" argument.
