Ammo Rotation

Depends on how old the kids are. Mine know nothing of safe gun handling practices because at 1 and almost 4 years old, I don't think they're ready though the 4 yr old is getting close. When the time is right, I intend to use this philosophy... Cornered Cat - Disarming Kids' Curiosity About Firearms

That's pretty much how I've tried to handle it. I've tried to have the patience to let my children handle, clean, disassemble and reassemble, and fire a myriad of firearms while constantly and repetitively talking about gun safety. I also try to answer the neverending barage of questions from them about guns. Show and tell is important too. Watching a pumpkin being turned into juice by a 12 guage is a very powerful lesson to a young child.:DKinda cool to me too!

Why is teaching children safe gun handling practices never advocated by anyone but me?

I don't know what I just did I'm using iPod touched post and it said quote I was going to say we all need to teach our children safety daily if they are around guns. Is there somewhere on this site to help me understand how you post under what someone says, post pics erc. Edited by Lowbuster

The Quote button under that person's post you want to include is what does it. I don't use anything but a PC though. Looks like you quoted the pertinent comment you wanted to follow to me.

For pics, you have to have a host for them somewhere. Your own ISP generally gives you space if you learn to use it. PhotoBucket seems to be the most popular freebie site. Get your pix where ever, then use the Image icon and paste or type in URL of the pic in the resulting dialog.

You can practice in test forum and best to ask these type questions in the Feedback and Support forum.

Is this a good place to extoll the many virtues of the revolver?stirthepot.gifbiggrin.png

Not really any over a semi, honestly. The accuracy isn't an issue at gunfight distances, and semis are plenty accurate enough for the job. I'll stick with 3x the ammo before a reload, and a faster reload, personally.

You ever need more than six rounds of ammo in any of your gunfighting?

Yeah, because you are gonna miss some, adrenaline rush, ect. Handgun rounds are weaker, so it is gonna take multiple rounds to stop someone. In all of my training with a pistol, the rule is 3-5 round fast bursts to upper chest and head. If you gotta engage multiple attackers, you are gonna need more than 6 rounds for that. If you are talking a .38 snubbie, it is more equivalent to a .380, because we are talking carry revolvers, not Dirty Harry guns.

In Iraq, using a handgun, it was 3 or 4 rounds, generally. Hollowpoints would have had a lot better performance, but we couldn't use them.

The intention for 5 round bursts is instant incapacitation. Your goal is to destroy any/all of the following: Heart, aortic arch, trachea, upper lungs, carotid artery, jugular vein, brain stem, and brain.

How you make a loaded gun quickly accessible in a house with children is something that many gun owners face, how it is handled varies. Getting a handgun and loading it is okay if you have the time to do it; but you may not have that time.

A gun is a mechanical device and no matter who makes it, it can fail. Clearing and chambering rounds everyday can lead to ammo failure and offers the chance of an AD/ND.

I own many handguns including high capacity duty type weapons. But the handgun spot next to my bed is occupied by an S&W 686 .357MAG. Daily ammo rotation or bullet set-back is not an issue, being out gunned is not an issue.

I’m not bad mouthing semi’s, I use them as my carry guns; but everything is application driven.

I love revolvers, they are accurate and fun to shoot. In my practical experience with combat, though, it is semi all the way. You need to be shooting, not reloading, you need fast reloads, fast accurate fire, large magazine capacity. I have no problem clearing a malfunction in a semi, I can do it quickly. I have a friend load empty cases and live rounds in my mags randomly, without me looking. I then load my magazine without looking at it. There are usually several "misfires" in with the live rounds this way. Also, with my Glock, I have put 500 rounds through it in one sitting. Never jammed, never failed to fire. I was using cheap factory reloads as well. Generally to clear the jam, all you have to do is slide your palm back over the ejection port as you are racking it with that hand. The only other need is to eject the magazine, rack the slide a couple of times, and insert your reload mag(mag problem might be your issue, don't want to reinsert a possible bad mag in your weapon).

A revolver can "jam", if fired fast enough, I have had the hot cases stick in the chambers, and even hitting the extraction rod with my palm did not clear them.

I don't worry about bullet setback, my weapon has a round chambered and if it is not on me at work(I am not supposed to carry there, and I have to tuck my shirt in), it is holstered in my backpack, within easy reach.

A revolver compared to a semi for combat handgunning applications has doubtful advantages, and I can't think of any, honestly. Any service caliber handgun round in a hollowpoint is going to have about the same practical effect. 3 9mm rounds center mass is gonna make someone just as dead as 2 .357 mags. As for reliabilty, a modern semi is as reliable if not more than a revolver, as a revolver has small, intricate parts inside it, and the cylinder timing can be off as well. The unreliability of semi's is myth.
