RUGER® SR9™ PRODUCT SAFETY WARNING AND RECALL NOTICE

DO NOT USE YOUR RUGER SR9 PISTOL

We have determined that some Ruger SR9 pistols manufactured between October 2007 and April 2008 can, under certain conditions, fire if dropped with their manual safeties in the "off" or "fire" position. The pistols will not fire if the manual safety is in the "on" or "safe" position.

We will retrofit all Ruger SR9 pistols starting with serial number prefix “330” (330-xxxxx) with these new parts at no charge to our customers.

In order to ensure correct fitting, this new part must be installed at our Ruger factory in Prescott, Arizona. We will remove the old parts and install the new group promptly, at no charge, and will return the pistol to you. The old parts will not be returned.

Step 1 - Contact us and provide your name, address, telephone number and SR9 serial number.

Step 3 - We will install the new trigger group in your SR9 and return it to you FREE of charge. When we do, we also will send you a FREE extra magazine as a "thank you" for your patience and cooperation. We will make every effort to return your pistol within one week, so we will not ask you to send it to us until we are ready to receive it. We expect to begin sending shipping labels and boxes in mid-May.

Do not load or fire your pistol until it has been factory retrofitted with these new parts! If you must fire your pistol, be sure to keep the manual safety in the "on" or "safe" position except when you are actually firing.

I really like Ruger, but I swear they just can't get it right when it comes to introducing a new handgun. Their P345 really felt and looked great when it came out two or three years ago, but the first several thousand of them had lots of problems. Now, here we go again. Its a good thing Rugers warranty service is so good.

How long does it normally take to get the recalled firearm back?

This was in our email from them!

I'm going to continue to use mine until I get my little box and pre-paid packing label from Ruger. As long as we don't drop it with it chambered and in the "safety off" position we should be okay.

I have a SR9 that is affected by this recall. It has 300 hundred rounds through it and has been flawless, but I have not dropped it either. Upon examining it I dont see what will keep any striker fired ristol from discharging if dropped just right. Maybe thats why I don't design guns. Anyway send it back if you have one and enjoy the free mag.

I have several rounds through mine as well, In fact I put a few through mine just yesterday. It is a good firearm. Most of the time I don't carry with one chambered because of kids around the house, plus i'm very careful not to drop it. I like to take care of my things. You would think that Ruger would give us something better than a magazine for our troubles and time. just my .02

I would ask for a deep deep discount on the LCP.:D

For a striker to be released, the sear must rotate... if the sear is not blocked when the trigger is not engaged, it is certainly possible for it to discharge if dropped just right... This is of course assuming that the firing-pin safety is faulty (which I believe is the case with the SR-9).

The only striker fired gun I am aware of which physically blocks the sear from rotating is the XD, via the grip-safety...

Pic of XD internal courtesy of Rob's Iraq Gun Shopping Blog.

The notch in item A is the item that molonlabetn is referring to. Item B is the sear that is spring loaded and will rotate clockwise when the trigger is pulled which releases Item C which is the tail of the firing pin allowing the gun to fire.

When the lever is pressed in Item A rotates clockwise which will then allow Item B freedom to rotate.
