Made a trade for a NIB SA M1A Scout. All I think Ill do to it is maybe change the hand guard, Add a detachable scope mount and scope, and a sling.

Any others out there enjoy the M1s? Tips on them? Best ammo? I will reload a few for this one.

I had forgot how loud a .308 was until I shot this one.

I have an M1A and an M1 Garand. Both are fantastic rifles. I wish my M1A had a match barrel, but I think the rifle as-is will out-perform me at his point. If you do decide to change hand guards, let me know if you get rid of that one.

I'd love...LOVE to have an M1A but ever since I had a lucking lug shear on a garand and almost drive it back into my face, I've been a little shy of them. I know, I know it's a silly excuse but the 1911 did me the same way [fired without pulling the trigger] and I have no use for them anymore either.

That walnut stocked scout is a sexy beast though. Dang!;)

I have owned the Socom 16,Scout,an currently own the Standard they have always worked well for me and have yet to let me down. I typically shoot 168's out of mine. I ordered a JAE stock for my Standard about 2 weeks ago now just have to wait the 10 months for it to get here.

Beautiful rifles! I have zero experience with them, but have considered the carbine to have an example of the M1. (I'm a little guy, I like a little rifle). I need a bigger safe and a bigger bank account.

Yeah with the options I got it was around $1200-1300 and a 10 month wait, but if you order it with all of the bells and whistles you can get it in 5 months but it will run you about $1600

I love my Scout!! It handles great and has really made me rethink my longer barrelled 308s. I even changed my LRB build to a shorter barrel just for that reason. Depending on your range results, you may want to do some cheap fixes to improve your accuracy. Over the past couple years, i been active with improving my accuracy and came across some great tips on the M14TFL site.

The quick fixes to watch for:

Clearance stock rubs on the gas cylinder.

Make sure the handguard doesn't touch the stock.

Buy a shim pack to take up slack on the front band.

Also, that same shim pack can increase dwell time.

Best of luck fighting off the M14 addiction. Have fun!!

After a few months I finally took my M1A out and did some real shooting.

First I used Tubbs Final Finish. 50 round to fire-lap the barrel or barrel lap ( this only recommended on new barrels. )

50 rounds shot at 30 secs apart and cleaning the barrel every 5 rounds was a slow task but I think it was well worth it.

I shoot a bit with the Weaver 4X scout scope and soon took it off. As I found at 100yds I could do just as well if not better. The 4 power just isn't enough for my eyes.

I was soon making groups around 3 in from my bench.

I shot a total of 200 rounds.

Now I have some 308 brass to load up.

Let's say as an older generation person, my affection for the Garand stlye of weapons is a passion. My modest selection includes:

M1 Carbine NPM

M1 Garand H&R

M 1A Standard

M 1A Loaded

Mini 14

Each has its charm and place. Be aware that the M 1 Garand and the M 1A's requires different burn rates of powders other than what most comercial ammo uses. Learn to reload and each will give pleanty of hours of fun.

I took my M1A and a Mini14 6.8 to the range last week after months in the safe. I'd forgotten how enjoyable the M1A is to shoot. if the weather cooperates, I'll make a range trip again this week.

I need to take my M1A out again. I have a bunch of 7.62 ammo in my gun safe waiting for me. I also ordered some CMI 20 round mags so as soon as they arrive, I'll be ready to go.

I saved up eBay winnings for three years to get a loaded standard model. IMO best semiautomatic rifle ever built. Match ready out of the box. Best rifle in the safe. I shoot the piss out of it.
