Recommended Posts

i got shoot a 1K match today with my 20" 5.56 and was very happy. got a 132 out of 200 on my run. did not stay for the 2nd run. had 2 misses 1 X and a couple of tens. ckh1830 spotted for me and talked a lot B.S. on my behalf also. i think the guy next was having some trouble. also got meet allycat. so there was a witness or 2.

did get some fearful looks from some shooters when they found out what i was using. but i do feel like i held up just fine.

the AR i built and used factory loaded black hills.

1K really should be 1000 yards

Yes, Iam a happy camper!:)

1 MOA (10 inch X Ring) roundbull targets for sling shooters F-Class shoots a 1/2 MOA ( 5 inch X ring) roundbull target. The black area of the target goes out the the 7 ring. Lowest point ring on the target is a 6. After that it is a miss.

You can use either, but if you use optics on a service rifle, it is no longer considered a service rifle, it is considered a match rifle, which will put you in the same catagory as bolt guns and have to compete against them, so shooting with irons will keep you in the same catagory with the other service rifles.

There are several divisions to be in.

Service Rife - Which is either a A2 configuration, M1A or the M1 Garand.

Match Rifle - Any Rifle Iron Sights, this is any caliber up to .35 caliber bolt gun with iron sights.

Match Rifle - Any/Any which means any rifle with scope up to .35 calliber

Palma - which is a bolt gun with irons in either .223 up to a 90 grain bullet or .308 unlimited in weight.

F-Class open - which is any bolt gun up to .35 caliber with a weight limit of 22 lbs. with scope. Use of benchrest style rest are allowed.

F/TR - which is any rifle with a bi-pod that is chambered in .223 or .308 (weight limit of 18 lbs including the scope and bi-pod)

Most popular Service Rifle at 1000 yards is either the M-110 or M1A

Match Rifle, well just about anything goes, but right now, 7mm RSAUM is comming on strong. Others are the .284, 6BRX, 6XC, 6CM .243, 6.5X.284

Palma Rifle - mostly .308 with 155 grain Palma bullets made by Berger or the Sierra 155 (2156), also popular is the Berger 185LRBT bullet and the Hornady 208 grain AMax. There are some using the .223 with the Berger 90 grain VLD.

Same general ideas apply to the two different F-Class divisions.

Yes I believe that they did.. but I have not shot accross the course or service rifle in years, so I guess in that part, I have not really tried to keep up with that too much, being that I shoot Palma gun mostly.

No, I was thinking about it, loaded ammo even.. but over slept. It won't be long and the shooting will begin here in Oak Ridge. I usually go to Chattanooga and shoot here at Oak Ridge. On rare occasion will make the trip for Tullahoma. If it were a 3X1000 instead of the 2X1000 format, it would intice me more to make the trip down there..

Thanks for the explanation. I was curious as to whether the OP used optics or not so I can determine how impressed I am. :D

btw... didn't they recently change the "service rifle" category to allow A4 configuration?

my score was low, but i was very happy, since i do not have place to "test" windage or reading the wind. plus i am being honest when i say when some shooters had almost looks of horror when they found out what i was using. i could here talking about 223 tumbling out of control before they would reach the target. one even gave me some 90 grain bullets to use. but i did not need to. i do wish to point out that everyone there was friendly and helpful, i understand the thing about a new guy showing up, with a light wieght gun. one of them who was talking about my bullets tumbling, also got upset when my target was scored wrong and got me the extra point.

i was F/TR so i could use my bipod.

Well that is good to hear, fore when I read that you were using the Sierra 77's, my first thought was, were they going to make the trip out of your gun. The .223 that I currently have is a bolt gun built on a Remington action, with a 30" Rock Creek bbl with a 7.2 twist. I use the 75 gr. Amax bullet with Lapua brass and 24.0 grains of H4895 powder, in the summer, the velocity is 3125 fps out of that bbl.. and have shot it on several occasions at 1000 yards.. but my .308 with 155's is wll inside that .223 combo by 1 MOA. It is good to see that you had fun, hope that you will continue and I can bet, that your already thinking about a better suited rig for shooting at 1000 yards..

i met allycat there, he said he was not shooting but just checking it out. but will be at the next one with a 308. i guess i made him feel okay about it, using my AR. i did not know who he was, but for some reason all you TGOers seem to who RWF is. i guess because Robert & Wanda are normally out doing stuff together, i guess.

Oak Ridge range is farther from Nashville correct.

also i promised Jim if he would put up with me (being a underpowdered newie ) i would not be back, unless i had a proper 1000 yard set up.

Jim is a good guy, a lil on the anal side at times, but he is a good person to know and shoot with. As for transonic disturbance, well a lot of that has to do with the length and angle of the boatail of the bullet. The 77's have, if I remember right, a long shallow angle boatail, which helps in this.

I'm guessing your bullets were transitioning to subsonic around 800. That doesn't mean they're gonna just freak out.

the JBM free on line table claims it was after 900 and would be 0.94 mach at 1000. thats with 2858 fps at the muzzle.

i hope you are talking about the bullets! :D like i said about other shooters, 20" 1x7 77's almosted freaked. but they congradulate me afterwards.

At the matches, advice is always free, the trouble is, whom's advice is worthy of storing away in your brain.. Most will tell you the truth, but there are a few that are full of it.. Pay attention to the sling shooters.. and what they have to say.. F-Class started in Canada by a sling shooter whom could not shoot sling anymore. I am not saying that sling shooters are smarter than F-Class shooters. There has been this trend amongst some F-Class shooters to start holding back info, like benchrest shooters used to do.. all secret squirrel stuff and all, I know a few like that, heck, it is creeping into the sling shooters too, all looking for adavantage. But most don't really care and want to help.. I have had many F-Class shooters come to me for advice in the past and I am happy to give it, it is part of the sport to see others grow within it. 99% of the time, your experience will be a win, win experience. Remember, the thought on the line is that you are not competiting against others, but only against yourself, in order to improve your marksmenship. Try not to get too serious about it, have a good time each time and your scores will improve with practice and in matches. Right now, your attitude is the correct one to have, you did really good considering your first time out and with what you used to shoot with.. I am impressed.. Now.. as for 600 yard matches.. your current rig should do way better..

As for coming to Oak Ridge, it is what, about a 2.5 hour drive.. if you come in for the matches.. once I get to know you, I am open to let you hang out with me to save you the cost of a hotel room.. I even cook good.. but I will let you buy a meal for the space to rack out!

Were the bullets 77 grain matchkings? If so, I get around 2750 out of my Black Hills stuff with a 24" 8 twist. My program puts the transition around 880. I figured you would be a little slower out of a 20".

I don't use JBM, but my sight adjust printouts are dead nuts out to 700.

Since you have a 7 twist, you can shoot about anything out of that gun. Take a look at this...

Loading Block AR-15 10-Round Length

I added one of these, and a BAD lever.
