I own a home in williamson county in a small subdivision. The street frontage is about 50 yards and the house is about 40 yards from the street on the side of a ridge.

I posted 3 signs in the front yard. One on each side of the driveway and one in the middle of the yard. The signs are about 10" square and bright yellow. You would have to be blind not to see the signs.

Today a young black man knocked and rang the door bell several times. Yesterday someone else rang the bell and knocked also. This is at around 1-2pm.

I called the magistrate's office when I posted the signs and they said signs are meant for hunting. If someone comes to the door tell them to leave and if they don't call the sheriff. They said I could not hold the person or shoot 'em or anything.

So, how do I keep people off my property or from ringing the door bell? I work 3rd shift and am getting tired of people waking me.

My neighbor also works 3rd shift and posted a sign in his yard that says " no day calling...night shift worker". Not sure if it has worked for him or not as I don't see him much but it's worth a try.

Unplug the doorbell (just kidding).

Maybe put a sign up right when you walk up to the front door that says "absolutely no soliciting". Most companies have a policy against knocking on doors with a no soliciting sign.

My dad has a sticker on his storm door that says proteceted by smith & wesson if you dont belong here then dont knock. He got it at some motorcycle shop. I think the only knocks he ever gets is usually church folks. Ive seen the seafood sales people walk up to the door read the little sticker & just walk away.

I dont think I'd announce to someone when I'm not home. You may return home from work to find you have nothing left.

Try a "No Soliciting and No Peddling" sign on your door. Or try this sign......

"I Shoot Every Third Visitor....The Second One Just Left"

Maybe some bio-hazzard tape across the front door.

or a chalk outline of a guy on the porch half in and half out of the door

with a little water based red paint splattered here and there.

The "No Soliciting" sign is a good one, I have one. Then right below it I have.

Another sign I have made, but not yet put up, may help as well...

It's bad that you can't keep someone from disturbing you in the first place, but I would think once someone was told not to come back, they could be charged sign or no sign...at least I know private property business owners can do that.

Thankfully no one comes back here for the most part. If someone did come back they would get a mouth full from me. And them words would not be nice. Doubt they would ever try again.

All of these signs are cute, but probably show questionable judgment if you actually put one up. I suspect a jury might find it shows a temperament toward violent confrontation. I suspect a sign to the effect of absolutely no uninvited guests or solicitation. Violators will be prosecuted for trespass might be a better way to go.

I like the ones with a picture of a shepherd that says I can make it to the fence in 2.3 seconds can you?

Personally, the no solicitors should be enough. We put a sign on the door with the kids nap times when they were little and we got a lot of "street vendors" No one knocked during those times.

A quad fifty mount might intimidate some of them. Especially if you could rig it to a motion detector so it would start moving as they entered the yard.

How about some type of clipboard mounted to the wall next to your door?

If you have a flyer or card leave it here, do not ring the bell. if we are friends then you would call first then come over and because you didn't eff off..... I dunno just saying.

Print off a copy of the thread from Tennesspeed where you hunted the guy down for ripping you off on the Internet. Paste that on your front door. That should solve the problem.

Hell I have a sign on my front door that reads "3rd shift worker do not knock. In the event you are too stupid to read the mail box this is 359 not 373!" The only people who ever knock are the morons at the Sullivan County Sherrifs Office that apparently cant read.
