[h=2]Need Information for Single Shot 35 Whelen for MS Primative Weapon Deer Season[/h]

:)

Hello I am a New member living in Robertson County, formerly from Texas and born in Mississippi.

I have been invited to deer hunt in Mississpi during their primative weapon season. MS has a new law that will allow 35 caliber and larger single shot rifles (break open) to be used during their PW season. A ton of MS hunters have purchased single shots rifles in 35 Whelen, which is an '06 case necked out to I believe .358. Supposedly, this round shoots very flat and delievers a lot of knock down power beyond 200 yards. I just would like to kown if anyone has any hands-on experience with a single shot in 35 Whelen ?

I've had no experience with a single shot, but I have fired several from a czech VZ24. It was a sweet rifle a guy I used to work with built. Loaded with 158g cast boolits I cast for .357 it was a real little putty cat. Loaded on the upper tier with a 280g soft point, it was a sledgehammer. It's an extremely capable cartridge.

I've got plenty of experience with .35 Remington. That's one bad *** cartridge. Two hundred grains of hell! I can only imagine that the .35 Whelen would be as good!

Any reason you chose this cartridge over something else? I would think a medium range load for. 45/70 would e good, or maybe a .375h&h if you wanted some more range.

Btw, if i wanted a single shot, id try to find a ruger no 1 if possible no matter what caliber you choose

I have some family in Mississippi that I could hunt with, so I spoke with them and looked up the regs. Sure enough, centerfire, .35 cal or larger, singleshot with exposed hammer. H&R, NEF T/C all of them are legal. It sounds like a trip to Mississippi is in order. Oh yeah, one more thing.....Mississippi wants DEER HUNTERS to KILL HOGS!!!!

I agree with the gentleman about Ruger #1, but very expensive on retirement income. If anybody finds a #1 Ruger priced right, please let me know.

If the requirement is a break open action and an exposed hammer, the #1 Ruger will not fit the bill. You'll be looking at an H&R or NEF Handi rifle, a Thompson Center, or one of those CVA single shots.
