Wise I had a camera

The other day as deer season was winding down, I was sitting in my treestand late one evening when I caught movement in the field in front of me. I knew it wasn't a deer because it was two small, as it passed an opening I saw that it was a bobcat. It looked small so I assumed (we know what that means) that it was farther off than I thought. But to my surprise when it came into the opening I was watching, it was a mama bobcat with two kittens. She was small (house cat size) and they were about like a squirrel. She sat at the edge of the field about 30 yards in front of me and they wrestled and played for a good 10 minutes before moving on. What a great experience that was and boy how I wished I had my camera.

Years ago, while picking gooseberries and digging snakeroot in the Blue Hills of Northwest Kansas, I came upon a momma bobcat and two kittens playing near their den. Momma raised her hackles and growled at me at first, but I just sat down on a tall rock outcropping about 25-30 yards away and lit a cigarette to calm my nerves (I'm not too proud to admit that the reason I sat down is because when she growled, it spooked me so bad that I forgot to run.) and she eventually calmed down and ignored me. I watched them for probably an hour before I realized that I was hungry and it was way past supper time.

A few days later I killed a rabbit on the way in and left it near the den entrance for them. After that she seemed to pretty well accept me and I eventually got as close as about 30 feet. I visited them several times and got to where I felt almost a kinship with them. It was one of the most magical times of my life. Never took a single picture - never even thought about it until a few years later - but the memories are burned indelibly into my soul.

You're a lucky man, Capt USA!

In the mid 70s, I went bow hunting on a tract of about 6,000 acres in Mississippi that had never had a road cut into it until about a week before. I had hurt my ankle playing football the night before so a friend helped me into the woods to my stand before daylight. I left a paper bag with my lunch in it in the crook of a tree about 30 feet from my stand. It was very foggy that morning and just before the fog burned completely off, I saw the outline of a big cat creep over to the tree where I had left lunch. It raised up on it's back legs and sniffed the lunch bag, dropped back down and walked away. Turns out from the tracks, it was a panther. (Accoring to an old gentleman who looked at the tracks and had seen and heard them in the area before.) I was so scared shooting at it never crossed my mind...
