I Have received several emails regarding the Clinic. Please indicate if you have a NRA classification, the type of rifle or the class that you are interested participating in.

What type of training would you like to see in the clinic?

Thank you,

Phil

Can't read any text on the first post....what's going on? I might be interested if the class depending on what is covered and the cost.

[h=2]I have copied the post below for your review. The cost would be $20 to $30 per person for the clinic. Nothing is in stone yet until we have enough interest in putting the program together. I would like to get 10 to 20 interested and I am looking at mid to late February. The biggest issue is if we only have 3 or 4 person interested but if we have 10 or 20 we will have \ enough coaches available to support the program.

I am also trying to schedule the Long Range Clinic the day prior to a match so that anyone traveling from out of town would be able to attend Saturday afternoon clinic, sight in the rifles after the clinic and we would have the a match to compete in the next day.

ORSA Long Range Clinic Interest[/h]

All, we are going to be starting the 2012 shooting season here in East TN. ORSA has increased its
Long Range
Match schedule. One of the questions I always get asked what do I need to bring to the match, ammo or just unclear of the rules. Please let me know if you would be interested in a clinic?

I am going to be working on an agenda so any input would helpful. We will be including, High Power, Palma, Fullbore, F-Class and Service Rifle.

Please email me with your contact info if interested.

Thank you,

Phil

For those of us who are 100% uninitiated with long range shooting, is a bone stock AR-15 an acceptable starting point for getting into these types of competitions?

Would this be somthing different than the excellent CMP clinics put on at ORSA?

The format would be very similar but ballistic, ammo, wind reading, shooting position, selecting the right rifle, equipment, safety, NRA long range course of fire.

Define "long". 200, 300, +? I'm not sure I have a proper gun for such a class

800,900 & 1000 yard would be a long range match. 600 yards and in would be a mid range match.

What equipment (ie gun, caliber) would one need to compete at that range?

I would like to attend, I will be coming from West TN (dyersburg) so I need to plan this for several weeks prior to arrange my logistics. I'm new to rifle matches. I have AR-15 and M1A for service rifle matches. I've never done any mid and long range matches.

That is a loaded question.... you can shoot 223 but not your typical A4. If you have a AR with a NM match 20 inch barrel with 75 or 80 grain bullets you can do it with a lot of practice with the right ammo. Just look at what the guys from the AMU put up for scores. Most guys use a 308 for Palma matches with a 155 grain + bullets going around 3000fps with a 30 or 32 in barrel (do not use 168 grain bullets for 1000 yds very unstable). Alot of guys that are shooting long range are using 6.5x284, 284, 7mm RSAUM, 300 win mag & 308 in 1000 yard matches. Most rifle to be competitive need to hold 1/2 moa at a 1000 yards, now this is the guys that have been shooting for a while. That is why I think the clinic would be very helpful. What works at a 100 yards does not mean it will work at 1000yds. If you don't have a rifle I have had very good luck with the Savages, you can get into a rifle for around a $800 to $1000, than you need sights which can be another $500 to $1000. There are deals out there but you need to know what you are buying.

I also have Banard Action, Krieger merdium palma barrel and a Mastin off set stock. My rear sight is a Warner with the 30mm Right Sight for the front. My savage rifles can also shoot with the best of them. I also see a lot of Remington and Winchester. But you know the biggest problem with my rifles is ME. You can only buy so many points at a 1000yds.

What equipment (ie gun, caliber) would one need to compete at that range?

You should be fine.. if it isn't a Service Rifle, then it is a Match Rifle.

Match Rifle, with a bi-pod on it, F/TR gun.

Can't put a bipod on it because of the bag rider.

Does it have a sling stud on it? Can you take the bag plate off? If not, then you would be in what is called F-Open

Oh by the way, what is the distance from the heel of your hand to the crook of your elbow?

It had a stud. Made the gun hard to shoot from a front rest. Nearly impossible to keep the gun from canting without constantly watching the level. Replacing the bag rider is serious surgery. Gotta pull the gas block.

Ah.. well I have a Sinclair Bi-Pod.. Sorry to hear that, you should have cut a slot in the hand guard and used T-blocks and hex screws to attach the plate. You can shoot it Like it is, not a problem. I will have the bi-pod with me for those that may need to use it. And we will have a few extra guns there incase someone shows up with something they thought that would work, but won't..

Also, when you all come to the clinic, we have concluded that this clinic will cover two days on a CMP clinic weekend, you will need at least 50 rounds of ammo for your rifle. We will have a couple of rifles that will be set up for shooting sling with irons..
