Such a thing as "2-gun"?

I finally have an AR coming in, and I was thinking about trying a little 3-gun every now and then. I have a few pistols that I've shot in IDPA at ORSA, and I have an Rem. 870 that I could get by with if I added a magazine extension. I really don't have any interest in tactical shotgun shooting, though. Plus, I understand that a pump shotgun is a bit of a handicap.

Is there a type of match that only involves rifle and pistol?

I believe the Steel City gang does a rifle-pistol match in Birmingham every year. That's about all I can think of. Honestly, just start shooting 3-gun with the pump. 3-gun shotgun is about 80% about reloading the gun anyway... until your skill start to develop you won't be significantly slower with the pump, and you aren't shooting for anything but pride anyway. If you take to 3-gun, and decide to shoot bigger matches for prizes, you can move to the autoloader later, the loading skills and equipment aren't any different. I used to hate the shotgun, now I really enjoy it. I'm still not any good at it, but it's fun. I'm even shooting a huge shotgun-only match in Kentucky this summer... with a pump gun (there's a separate division for them in this match)!

Plenty of folks go with a pump shotgun, maybe 1 out of 7 or 8 has a pump. Its a handicap of sorts; yours will not jam and sometimes the auto's do, and your time/score will be a little worse, maybe a lot worse, depends on how fast you can shuck it. The real problem is capacity ---- if you cannot get close to 8-10 in your gun, it will really slow you down to keep reloading. That is easy to fix though: most models accept an extended mag tube that costs like $30 or so and is easy to install (even I was able to do it!). You can enjoy the sport with what you have, is where I am going, so long as you are not expecting to win (in which case you will end up buying more guns and gear anyway). If you hate the shotgun stage, well, its usually just 1 out of 4 or 5 stages as most places do not really use the shotgun on every stage --- it requires expensive, heavy targets instead of the easy to set up cardboard stuff used by rifle and pistol.

We at Music City Tactical Shooters do incorporate some multi-gun events at our range in Dickson from time to time. It will be either rifle/pistol, rifle/shotgun, or pistol/shotgun. Check out Music City Tactical Shooters. We sometimes do tweek the schedule based on other area matches and suggestions from members.

Green River club at Bowling Green has long gun side matches and hosted a tac rifle match which was well attended. Maybe a little far from Knoxville.

I would really like to see more two-gun style matches. Rifle/pistol or shotgun/pistol. Three guns are awesome, but so much crap to lug around and it seems like they take forever sometimes. But short of actually getting involved in a club, I have enjoyed all the local matches I have attended. Green River Gun Club and Music City Tac Shooters
