How much stock should you really put into this prediction? There seems to be a mass movement over to accepting this as it's over alot of media we look to. So how

are you to prepare for this world changing event ?

Dude, you're way off base. It's 12/21/12. How ya gonna prepare if you don't even know which day it is?

But it'll probably involve zombies.

The Mayans never said the world would end on that date. December 21, 2012 is simply the day that the calendar will go to the next b'ak'tun. It's just Happy New Year on a bigger scale.

If you want to worry about your future, read up on Edgar Cayce. :tinfoil: Shifting magnetic poles have happened before.

I give little credence to a so-called prediction from a people that couldn't even see their own end coming, much less the end of the world...

Shifting magnetic poles seem to happen often (but not since the dawn of civilization). They don't show any evidence of mass extinctions coinciding with polar shifts though. Although, in previous polar shifts, they didn't have a civilization as complicated as ours to keep up either.....

I watched some tv show that said a pole shirt happens over many many year. No worries there.

uh, most of our electronic devices (and some mechanical) require the "pole shirt" to be the way it currently is in order to function. So that is a potential problem. Also, there is the theory that the weakening of the ionosphere during the "pole shirt" will expose us to dangerous radiation that it normally blocks for us. Who knows?

It's just another ruse for some opportunistic people to become very wealthy playing off the fears of others, much like Y2K and gloBULL warming.

The Mayan's would probably have added on to the calendar except for one thing, the Spaniards. The Mayan calendar is not what worries me. The scientist who believes he can alter human genetics does. We, as a species, are just full enough of ourselves to create our own demise. This is an amazing video of where science is going, but, as the reporter states "we do not fully understand how this happens". An "I am Legend" situation in more plausible. We will more than likely be our own demise. We will create a cure for one disease that sets us up for another disease. Also global overcrowding is an issue. We are expanding too rapidly for Earth to support us.

If anyone really believes the world will be ending, prove it! Let me have your bank account information and CCs, you will not be needing it or be around to pay for it.

LiveScience has some cheery pages on doomsday topics--

On the psychological aspects of doomsday, this article is good-

link-- Millenarianism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The article has a long list of millenarian movements with links. The links are fun to read.

A couple of items not on the list which seem to me to have the requisite characteristics-- The Peak Oil "The Long Emergency" prognostications, and the Global Warming movement.

Millenarian groups claim that the current society and its rulers are corrupt, unjust, or otherwise wrong. They therefore believe they will be destroyed soon by a powerful force. The harmful nature of the status quo is always considered intractable without the anticipated dramatic change.

In the modern world, economic rules or vast conspiracies are seen as generating oppression. Only dramatic change will change the world and change will be brought about, or survived, by a group of the devout and dedicated. In most millenarian scenarios, the disaster or battle to come will be followed by a new, purified world in which the true believers will be rewarded.

Aren't there those little tabloid magazines at stores that predict the world is ending every year?

Yes they are. One day I am sure they will get it right.
