Electronic Ear Muffs, Recomendations

The Impact Sport ain't broke on me yet. The only oddity-- very occasionally I'll pick up a little low-level intermittent static on one side. Maybe a loose connection or intermittent noisy semiconductor. They work fine even with the static happens and the static is much lower level than the audio amplification. Due to the rare intermittency, have thought it may even be intermittent RF interference.

My studio gear is very well shielded and grounded, but there is some idiot in the neighborhood with a nasty-boosted crazy overmodulated CB rig, and sometimes he can SLIGHTLY get into my studio gear. Also noticed a couple of times when I was playing music gigs and police cars would park outside right on the other side of the wall behind the stage, even police gear can get into normally-well-shielded audio equipment if they are close enough.

My vote would be a bad connection. Noisy semis are VERY rare since they stopped using germanium (decades ago). Could be a connector or pot, but most likely a wire. You can probably fix them with a little skill and some time.

Yes if it becomes less intermittent or more noisy will probably dig into them.

Strange, the $14.99 HF muffs which EMB145 mentioned-- I used a set of those with woodworking tools and they worked pretty good for a couple of years. Maybe the HF $15 muffs are not all the same, but my only gripe (other than non-stereo and "lo-fi" amplification) was that the battery brackets were made out of very cheap tin can metal and needed adjustment every time batteries were changed. Maybe not all of em have such cheap battery brackets.

Anyway, one of the web reviews on the HF muffs mentions another possible RF issue. Dunno if it is a valid theory, just wouldn't have thought about it--

Sometimes the cell phone hand shaking the towers makes the irritating noise we have all heard but it goes away fast and is just ever so often. That happens with ANY audio type device near certain cell phones. Yeah the more expensive devices work better and have stereo mics but for the price it can not be beat.

I had some custom made ear plugs made at Camp Perry, they work great!

I honestly like the $25 set of electronic muffs from Walmart. I was sceptical at first but they work really well. They're not low profile however so those Caldwells listed above might be just the ticket for you. I can't use plugs due to some ear canal issues so I'm a muff only man. Sorry couldn't resist!

I shoot over in our field and I can hear Mom and sis talking when I'm not shooting. Sure I'd like a nice pair like everyone on the gun mags/vids. If I shot more I might get me some nicer one.

Currently have a set of Peltor muffs. I like them a lot, but I keep forgetting to turn them off so the batteries ar always dead.
