....alcohol was present at the scene

I would imagine he had a decent buzz going, dobbed his barrel in the ground without realizing, oops, barrel obstruction. Or maybe he was shooting papaw's old wire twist with some fresh late model ammo??

May never know.

......even if alcohol had no play in the incident, the guy was obviously an idiot for mixing the two. They never go together, under any circumstances and anyone who thinks they do is likewise an idiot.

.

That's the first thing I thought as well.

There just isn't enough information in that article for me to draw a conclusion.

"Alcohol was present" just colors the story with innuendo. Were they drunk?

Not very good reporting. Maybe a follow up to the story should be done.

I'm sorry to hear someone died. Tell me more.

there is a big difference between alcohol was present and rip snorting drunk

Arguable.

The fact that it was present at all speaks volumes for this man's intelligence.....or lack thereof.

it is not arguable at all. May be he was drinking, no one here knows this to be true or untrue.

I have a pistol sitting on the bar right now, right next to it is a bottle of rum I forgot to put the cap back on, underneath the bar are numerous bottles of liquor.

If for some tragic reason my pistol kills someone here tonight it would be reported that alcohol was present. Your first assumption would be that I was drinking and nothing could be further from the truth.

Yessir, but the story says he was firing his shotgun in the woods. We can safely assume he was either hunting or shooting recreationally. Do you make a habit of having booze when you out shooting? No Mike, I wouldn't believe you would. My Scotch collection sits right beside my gun cabinet, so the same could be said about me, but there'll never be a time when I would be "in the woods" with both. You're right, there's no way to prove he was drunk. I was merely pointing out that he had it all while on an outing. Sorry, but if any of you guys take alcohol with you on any outing that involves firearms, then I am glad I don't know you personally. There's nothing that can be said that could justify being out in the woods with a gun AND booze on your person. Nothing I would entertain, not that that means anything to anyone but me.

last fall I met with a bunch of guys to shoot. Towards the end of the day a beer run was made and quite a few guys were drinking beer or whatever else they had. Some people were still shooting though not drinking at all. It is the exact same scenario as what seems to offend you so much.

Alcohol around guns is not some instant recipe for disaster.

Be happy you don't know me personally. I am in the midst of planning to shoot and camp with a bunch of guys. I can promise you alcohol will be on that trip.

Rumor is that both men had been consuming alcohol and the weapon in question was an old taped together $40 single shot.

We are quick to condemn folks based on minimal information. If he was drinking it was wrong, but with the excess of crappy reporting today and the knee jerk reaction of everyone to make judgments of others I'll hold off for more information.

We live in the woods and I have empty beer bottles in the trash not more than 15 feet from where I shoot targets. I don't drink and handle guns, but that happens to be where the trash cans are located. If an accident occurred, I could see the report reading like the one in the OP.

"Alcohol was present" is a meaningless phrase purely intended to make you prejudiced against the two fellows. There is little doubt that the death was caused by some act of stupidity or carelessness. But whether the men had actually been drinking is not something that you will know from that news story.

"Alcohol was present". The initial report I saw said that a man was "shot at a party". I can see an agenda if you can't.

Shotguns do occasionally blow up. I was on a posse at the state championships at Wartrace this year when a nice double barrel blew the barrels off. Scared the crap out of all of us but nobody got hurt. I've also seen the barrel plugged with dirt blow. It's not a pretty sight.
