I finally got around to taking out my M44. It is my first C&R purchase.

I fired three round groups at 25,50,& 100 yards. They were all fired offhand and using surplus ammo.

At 25 I was getting 4 to 5 inch groups. they were well centered but spread out.

At 50 they were not much better.

at 100 they tightened up to about 3".

POA & POI were pretty close but with that wide of a spread it is hard to be certain.

I fired with the bayonet out and folded back. I saw no difference in the grouping.

Recoil was not nearly as bad as I expected. it kicks about the same as my 303 jungle carbine.

I did have a problem with cycling the bolt after firing. on some it was very hard to rotate the bolt the last 20 or 30 degrees. I had to slap the bolt handle to get it to turn. It did not do it for every round but it did do it enough that I want to adress it. Any ideas?

Clean the chamber thoroughly with Hoppes, Mineral spirits or whatever. It's the residual cosmoline in there that causes the sticky bolt.

My 91/30 used to be bery bad about it but I just kept shooting, cleaning, shooting, cleaning.....it's now quit smooth.

-get a big brass brush that fits the chamber

-Chuck it in a drill

-dip it in acetone or hoppes

-hog the ever lovin $%^% of the chamber with that brush.

It will take the varnish from the cosmoline off and take care of your problems.

I used a 12g mop with kroil. None of my Mosins stick now. Great guns, but they're getting expensive to shoot...probably cause I shoot more now that they don't stick.

BTW. My ugly stick...the one with the awful aluminum front sight now had a scope. 2 inches high at 122 yards...round after round after round. it was a 91/30 (we think) but it's pretty much a "Bubbaed" military. It's 2 inches longer than a 44 or a 38 and shoots much better. I'd like to find a free 91/30 stock, cut it down and make it fit. And yes, I can do it.

I like my mosin, I use a 7.62x39 bore snake and bore solvent, it's like a mirror in the inside!
