Sounds like a good plan, since you know what you are getting into. My thoughts were just so you do not spend $1200 in parts and work on a $500 gun and then realize you wanted a better slide/frame fit after all, or something. If you want to tinker and learn, this is an inexpensive way to do it.

I've only ever sold 1 firearm. I literally found it in my closet at my parents house after it sat there untouched for 4 years, forgot all about it. I normally wouldnt have sold it but my wife was very persuasive. I'm with TMF 18B, it's a cold day in hell when I sell one of my other 40.

Thanks for everyone else's opinions, it sounds like I'll have a good shooter out of the box. I'm still going to tinker but I promised my wife I'd slow roll it, if you can believe that you're more gullible than her. Thanks again.

If you want a low cost option to start with why not take a look at the Remington R1?

It’s made in American by an American company and costs about the same as the imports.

Going to have to agree with you on both accounts there. Don't have a Garand, yet, but I have one for my Enfield.

I looked at the R1 but I really like the look of the full length frame and flat bottom slide, it just looks more unique to me. Maybe for the next 1911 project since you can't have too much of a good thing.

I don't understand "gritty" either. My RIA GI is fine. Was fine to me when i bought it. Dolomite did a trigger job for me and it is more awesome now.

Grease not oil on it.

I did not stick a magnet on any of them but they are too heavy for alum. Now, our colt is partially alum, and I don't think you will see a lot of people saying the gold trophy is a bad firearm.... but pretty sure the ria is steel.

Mine is steel, although it appears to be cast instead of forged. The lightweight models from different makers feature aluminum frames. I don't much think RIA makes one of these.

FWIW, Tom at Guns For America, the gun store on Powell Ave in the 100 Oaks area had two RIAs in stock yesterday. He had a 5" Tactical and the 4" MS both for $439.

I have thre RIAs. 5" GI, 4" MS and my pride and joy - a 5" RIA Match. I got the Match from Magiccarpetrides here on this sight. They are hard to find and I believe I bought his within five minutes of his post. I wired him the money immediately and he drove from Knoxville to Nashville and I met him at lunch. I think another person, maybe two on this site has owned it, but it ends here. I'll never let it go unless I had to.

A couple of buddies I shoot with have drooled over the trigger and tried to wrangle it away from me. The trigger is superb. It may be taboo since it has target adjustable sites but I carry it. I shoot it too well not to.

I was at the range this past Saturday shooting my homemade self cast reloads and checked for squibs twice. When I brought the target in you could see the first three rnds went in the same hole. You could barely tell three went in. I love it.
