Cupcake Deemed 'Security Threat' Confiscated By TSA At Las Vegas Airport | Fox News

A Massachusetts woman says a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agent confiscated her cupcake because its "gel-like" frosting could have been an explosive.

Rebecca Hains, or Peabody, told WHDH-TV that she had traveled from Boston's Logan International Airport to Las Vegas with two red velvet cupcakes packaged in jars.

"And actually, the TSA agent who saw them, picked them up and said 'these look delicious,' and sent me on my way," Hains said.

While in Nevada Hains ate one of the cupcakes, which had been given to her as a gift, and saved one for her return trip.

But after arriving at McCarran International Airport on Wednesday, Hains was stopped by a TSA agent who said the frosting and glass container were a security threat.

"He explained to me that the frosting constitutes a gel-like substance and part of the way that he had arrived at this decision apparently was that it was in a container in which it conformed to the container's shape," Hains said.

"I offered to take it out and put it in a zip-lock bag on the spot and he said 'no I can't let you touch it.'

"So once he had identified it as a security threat it was no longer mine and I couldn't have it back."

The TSA said baked goods are usually OK to take through security and it was reviewing the incident.

The store where the cupcake was purchased has also offered to send Hains a replacement cupcake.

I wonder at what point we, as a nation, will say we have had enough?

And with the TSA's recent foray into highway security at what point are they going to start using the same security rules they use at the airports for those on public roads? Imagine random security searches making sure we don't have explosive cupcakes or designs on a purse(TSA stops teen for purse with gun design).

We are getting dangerously close to losing all freedoms our servicemembers have given their lives for us to have.

Yep. The saying attributed to Ben Franklin says it well, “Those who desire to give up freedom in order to gain security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one.â€

IMO the TSA and a few other agencies are a threat to my security.

I guess it's a good thing I don't work for the TSA because my attitude would be, "If you can hijack an airplane with a pair of tweezers or a cupcake, then you DESERVE the son of a bitch!"

Sheesh! :surrender:

I really wonder when it was all end. How much is enough. Cupcake icing and a jar? Really?

TSA is a joke. Except it is scary not funny.

I think the "security agents" have gotten tired of the "Thousands Standing Around" jokes and decided to do something just to show they are really making an effort to make us all safe and secure when we travel. You Know you might choke on those dry cupcakes.

When iPhones, XBOXs and MTV are in jeopardy then people will start to care. These items mean more to the general public than liberty.

Tha just might do it. Seems like I'm the only person I know that doesn't have to have all those toys attached to my body to function anymore.

can someone explain to me why taxpayers money goes to training all these bomb and drug sniffing dogs, but when a cupcake comes through that some doughboy TSA agent says could have "an explosive gel like icing" on it, why they can't just put the damn cupcake under the dog's nose and if he doesn't go on alert mode, then let the cupcake through. :)

I guess that would just be too easy though. Is it too much to ask for any common sense to prevail anymore?

as long as people have an escape from reality, they will continue to ignore the issues and problems.

as long as they have NBA, NFL, MLB, NCCA Football, NCAA Basketball, movies, tv, internet, computers, porn, they wont turn away from those things long enough to raise a legitimate fuss and get the attention of those in charge.

so, until something happens in this country on a scale large enough to piss everyone off, the government and their SS Nazi style organizations will continue to push harder and harder, and impose more restrictions, cinching the noose ever tighter around the collective neck of American citizens, and they'll keep getting away with do it.

the sad part is the point that many who have replied to this thread, and the people who have commented on the news site where the article is posted at are missing, is that the terrorists have won, and each time something like this happens, it's another victory for them. The 9/11 attacks and the attempt to blow up the Detroit plane that was foiled when the guy had explosives in his shoes, has ignited this mass paranoia in this country and brought it the brink of foolishness, disgust and despair. And that plays exactly into the terrorists plans, because their barbaric acts have caused the American society to change the way it does things, we jump at loud noises, people duck for cover when a car or truck backfires, it has given the government reason to impose "security measures" and to tighten it's reins on what people can do and what they can't do. They have us scared stiff to the point where every little thing is blown out of proportion. A hs kid sneaks into a school and plants a blow up doll as a prank, and he's charged with a felony because it could have been a terroristic plot.

This is exactly what the terrorists want. Fear, pandemonium, paranoia, and to create internal conflict and distrust.

Nevermind the fact that the only people who are trying to hijack American airplanes or blow them up are of Middle Eastern descent or are a religious muslim affiliate. Yet, our own government is suspicious of every single person, regardless of their skin color, ethnicity, or religious background. But if we don't treat EVERYONE equally, well then that's discrimination and it's not fair.

Let's punish the American citizens, even though they aren't the one's blowing **** up or hijacking anything. makes a lot of sense. Instead of focusing the resources on the people who are committing these atrocities and acts of terrorism, they're wasting the taxpayers money to meet some liberal spawned, brain cell defunct thought process to worry about equality, and profiling everyone the same way, so no one gets discriminated against or is made to feel like they're a lesser person.

This country has become a land full of weenies and whiny babies that are selfish, prideful and greedy. He called me a name, waaaah. She said something that hurted my feelings, waaaah. He offended me, so I'm suing for money. He violated my civil rights, so I'm pressing charges.

the priorities of this government are so far beyond screwed up, it's like a collective rerun of the 3 Stooges mixed in with Groundhog Day, set to auto-loop. this **** just never ends, and the crazy, ridiculous, crap that goes on just gets dumber, more ignorant, and more unbelievable with each passing day. Yet, the People are just as much to blame, because all anyone ever does is just shake their head, post it up on the internet, grumble about it, and then we forget about it until the next unbelievable thing happens and then we go back into Groundhog Day mode ourselves.

I don't have the answer or the solution of what we should do, but a wise man once said "continuing to do the same thing over and over, while expecting a different result is the definition of insanity."

so in the words of Earl Pitts....WAKE UP AMERICA!
