Heading to Michigan...

Recommended Posts

I am heading to Michigan for the holidays in a few days and wanted advice on dealing with LEOs when using an out of state carry permit. This will be the first time traveling since getting my permit, and was wondering if anyone has had any trouble with out of state LEOs recognizing a TN HCP.

MI is pretty good about it they now allow NFA stuff

It is duty to inform

Your HCP qualifies as implied consent (BAC .02 and up your screwed) I know I shouldn't need to mention it

OC is allowed

And I had a great time when I went up to see daughter and grandbaby

Carried at the Downtown Hoedown

The State police have a link with the laws for all officers Local and State (implemented after a court battle) to make sure that officers could verify all current laws and regs.

Places off limits

Schools or school property but may carry while in a vehicle on school property while dropping off or picking up if a parent or legal guardian

Public or private day care center, public or private child caring agency, or public or private child placing agency.

Sports arena or stadium

A tavern where the primary source of income is the sale of alcoholic liquor by the glass consumed on the premises

Any property or facility owned or operated by a church, synagogue, mosque, temple, or other place of worship, unless the presiding official allows concealed weapons

An entertainment facility that the individual knows or should know has a seating capacity of 2,500 or more

A hospital

A dormitory or classroom of a community college, college, or university

A Casino

"Premises" does not include the parking areas of the places listed above.

Thanks. I am up to date on my knowledge. My biggest is the LEOs knowledge. Thanks for the info about a lawsuit. I know my father in law in MI had some problems while OCing inMI with a MI HCP a couple of years ago. Actually had 2 officers say he couldn't OC and it was classified as brandishing and wound up at station with Chief of Police apologizing but was big hassle.

This is the first year not going to the greater Detroit area headed further north to their "hunting camp" for some Christmas snow. I think all will be ok for a levelheaded southerner like me.

Lol

I think you'll be ok. I'm actually surprised to see how pro gun Michigan has become. I never thought I'd see the day. I left in '99 because of their anti gun BS.

Where in MI if you don't mind me asking?

No kidding? That's awesome, that'll really set my in-laws off next time I go up there. I don't OC so I never looked into it for MI, so they don't know I'm carrying when I go up there. Next time I'll probably bring my OC holster just to get them going. I'm glad to hear they're so friendly considering that state tends to lean left.

Just be careful traveling through the states in-between here and there. If memory serves me correctly they may not be as friendly. Just double check is all I am saying.

Kentucky should be no issue at all. Ohio is supposed to be good too. I've never had a problem in either and I've driven that route more times than I can count.

I am in W Tenn and changed my route to avoid Illinois. Which is the preferred and shortest rte.

Unless they have changed, Ohio requires that you immediately inform the officer that you are a license holder and you are armed if you are stopped. My dad had a friend who almost got in a heap of trouble over this a year or two back. He was stopped, tried to tell the officer but every time he got a word out the officer told him to shut up. he tried several times, but eventually shut up as instructed. He found himself cuffed and in the back seat of the cruiser a short while later when the officer finally found out he was carrying. No charges were filed but it took a lot of explaining at the station and I guess they reviewed the audio recording and realized what happend.

Maybe he should have contacted a lawyer so he could start planning his retirement fund.
