I have had several LE friends remind me that gun ranges are becoming a favorite spot for thugs. They can always tell when the shooter is out of ammo, and if there isn't several people around, additional gun shots will not trigger a response from people. Always keep a backup on you at the range.

Hard way to have a suspicion confirmed. Prayers up.

well, out of courtesy for those around me when at the range, I used to remove my handgun from its holster, drop the magazine, and clear the chamber and place both on the bench behind me, with the slide locked open. That won't be happening anymore after reading this. From now on it'll be staying in my holster, loaded and chambered. can't trust anyone nowadays.

I always keep a loaded mag of hollow points in my pocket and shoot with the others. My target mags may be empty but ..... . Gun never lays on the bench it goes back into the holster. I use to shoot at an un maned range in Tallahassee, Fl. this became a habit that I will always stick with for good reason.

Not that it would be any better if it was a younger person but I sure do get sick of hearing how some people live into their 70's 80's and even 90's only to have their lives snuffed out by some worthless scumbags. This case does seem as if someone was watching him and knew that he would be there. My Prayers go out to him and his family, I hope he recovers and is back doing what he loves soon.

While it may not be what most folks may consider "proper" and even though I shoot mostly at a small indoor range I always still have a concealed weapon on me that I am not firing that day. I have been like that since I started going to the range several years ago, the range management knows and I have theirblessings. I simply dont trust folks anymore and it hurts me to even admit as much, but it is true, even those folks with which I should have every reason to believe are good folks and who are at the range for the same reason that I am.

Still that one weapon always stays loaded and completely out of sight and hopefully it always will.

EDIT: it is good to know that I am not alone in my thinking about this idea.

I dont get the "now" part of the comments. This sort of thing has happened since the dawn of time in one way or another. When was this mythical time where people did not rob and murder one another? I cannot seem to recall it in my lifetime. I wish the worst on this guy when they catch him, though, pretty low down.

I think it probably stems from the fact that we have such better and more instant forms of communication, and find out about everything now, as opposed to years ago where news wasn't nearly as pervasive. Combine that with the fact that at least some of the world is less barbaric, and I think that gets us to the "now" parts.

Yup,if I fire my carry pistol I always reload and put it back in my holster,I like to have it ready at all times.Even at the range.

I usually shoot all the guns I carry when at the range. Will make sure I have a couple of mags left after this. I have never felt uneasy at Norris but this just goes to show always be on guard.

Even if packing at a deserted range, it would be pretty easy to get "ambushed" while setting targets or whatever. Nothing is foolproof. Ya pays yer money and takes yer chances. But I'm always carrying at the range. Like Greenego, if I'm shooting the carry gun, I keep the defense ammo in a separate mag, and reload the carry gun immediately after shooting before reholstering.

Going downrange to check targets, it probably isn't a good idea to leave firearms or mags loaded on the bench. Make a criminal at least have to load yer weapon before he shoots you with one of yer own guns. If a range is pretty deserted, or even if busy, it would be pretty easy for somebody to walk off with guns while people are changing targets. I'm surprised you don't hear stories of simple sneak theft more often at ranges.
