Update: talked to the vet. Said it wasn't a stroke but vestibular vertigo. Common with older dogs. My dog is recovering very nicely and is making great progress. He isn't 100% there but getting there and we are being supportive and helping his recovery.

Glad to hear this! My 18 year old beagle had a stroke a few years ago, and letting her go was one of the hardest things I've ever done. Hope your friend is with you for a good while.
