Has anyone ever watched the 1954 movie Seven Samurai?

I just watched this old black and white Japanese movie made in 1954. It was in Japanese, subtitled in English. I didn't know what to expect but it blew me away. Hollywood copied it when they made The Magnificant Seven, but I think the original was better. I laughed my butt off.

You should check out "Yojimbo" by the same director.

I've never seen an Akira Kurusawa movie that wasn't fabulous. Am not a movie buff, but Kurusawa is my favorite movie director/producer.

Watching Samurai helped me to better understand the plot and some of the characters in Magnificent Seven. All in all, Samurai was a much better movie. Toshiro Mifune was brilliant.

Bergman also made some stunning films - Virgin Spring and The Seventh Seal come to mind. Odd little stories with great scenery and photography.

TCM is a good place to catch the old classics from Kurosawa, Bergman and Eisenstein, not to mention John Ford.

One of the best movies of all time.

Check out Dark Fortress... it provided a lot of the inspiration for Star Wars.

Kirasowa I think. Also "Last Man Standing" w/Bruce Willis a remake. There have been quite a few remakes under different names over the years.

Kirasowa made some good flicks. Actor Toshiro Mifune was in a lot them.

I will have to agree! Well at least with the Akira part! Some people read books, I love movies! TCM is my fav channel!

It's been on my "to watch" list for a long time but I've never gotten around to seeing it yet. One of these days...

If you liked that one check out "13 Assassins" it's a recent Japanese film along the same lines as 7 Samurai, also subtitled. (Scored a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes)

I liked it. I also liked the Seventh Seal someone mentioned on here...

When I was younger, I wouldn't watch subtitled movies at all. A long stint in Europe cured me of that....In England many years ago, I learned to love watching many subtitled movies...saw many that I wouldnt have seen otherwise. I still like them and see them on cable now and then.

13 Assassins (Official Movie Site) - Starring Kôji Yakusho, Takayuki Yamada and Yûsuke Iseya - Now On Demand EVERYWHERE, DVD and Blu-ray? - Trailers, Pictures & More

This is a good movie. I watched it not too long ago on netflix. Apparently it is a remake, but stays very true to the original in terms of plot. I have yet to see the original 7 samurai but it is on my list, I have seen various remakes of it and know the general plot, but still need to watch the original.
