Love the P51. A couple years back there was one at the air show at the Athens airport. I had a chance to get up close and look it over. A while later it made a high speed low altitude pass down the runway with the Merlin singing away. Oh, what music.

Quite a few years ago I bought a collectable Thunderbird, as in car, from a guy in Florida who owned a P51. The car and the P51 were painted with the same silver. From the list below, I recognize the name of the guy I bought it from as Shelby Burch from Winter Garden, FL.

There is a guy out in the east Knox county area that flies several different WWII planes. He has been doing it since we moved up here in 1999. You can hear him swooping around. He also flies a aerobatic plane but that one is a bit unnerving because he routinely cuts his engine and falls out of the sky.

I went to Oshkosh in 1989 and it was one of the most memorable moments in my life. My dad was a pilot and several cousins that are pilots so I grew up hanging around airports. Got to sit in. P51 as a child at a EAA fly-in at the Humboldt, Tn airport that a dentists out of Memphis flew up just for the day. I will never forget his fly-by to surprise everyone and let us know he was there.

He's got a pretty cool hangar. It's immaculate, and he's got a completely restored old willys jeep and a lot of old WWII memorabilia on display. I got to have lunch in there a couple of years ago with my grandfather when the Confederate Air Force was bringing an old B-17 through town.

I've got my grandfather's logbooks in my safe. He flew over three hundred missions in various model B-17s throughout the war in both theaters. Getting to fly with him in that plane that day is truly one of my favorite memories. He was at the end of his life, but he may as well have been a 25 year old kid again that day.

2-3 years ago he was flying over the West End area. I was at work and heard the drone.. went outside and was really surprised to see him circling around above Vanderbilt. Turns out a friend of his is a professor at Vanderbilt, and had the guy fly over as part of his WWII lesson.

Well, the pilot flew on the wrong day, so he came back the next day and I enjoyed it just as much as the day before!

It's spectacular. Polished aluminum/blue.

The problem with old war birds isnt the initial cost or the fuel prices, it is the cost of maintenance. For every hour you fly one you have to work on it eight. Add in the cost of the annual inspection and the set hour overhauls and the price adds up quickly. Plus you have to add the cost of insurance in there too. Thats not to say that there isnt plenty of rich men hour there who love doing it. When I went to OshKosh there were probably 20 Mustangs there. Here is a list of the surviving P-51's that are still in the United States.

the air museum in the smokeys has two p-47 they are nice and are 2 of like 6 in the world that are flyable,when i was there they were doing they're yearly inspection and go to see one fly it was cool.
