Anyone know what the rules are in Tennessee as far as going out and shooting targets? I guess I can call TWRA and ask but I thought someone here might know already.

Uh don't shoot yourself..maybe I don't know what rules you are referring to. If you're legal to be on that property shooting then you're good. Certain cities don't allow shooting firearms in the city limits. Make sure you got a good backstop.

Well, TWRA would be the wrong people to ask (they deal with wildlife enforcement, not general law enforcement), but as long as you're out in the county there really aren't too many rules regarding target shooting. Best bet would be to call your Sheriff's office and ask.

At TWRA ranges you follow whatever rules are posted. Same with other public and privately operated ranges.

On private land do whatever makes you happy just make sure there is an adequate backstop behind whatever you're shooting and don't shoot in the direction of any houses.

I think the same rules as hunting apply if you are on or near another person's house or land. Otherwise you have local laws such as "not inside the city limits" if you are in a larger town. In general you can shoot all you want on your own property so long as you do not 1) hit anything that is not on your property, 2) disturb your next door neighbor all day and all night with noise, and 3) fail to follow any local laws if you live in the city as I already said. The noisy neighbor thing is not against the law precisely but you do not want to be the guy in a noise dispute, the cops hate it, it makes everyone mad, and its generally just not a good thing.

Target shooting is prohibited on all Tennessee WMAs outside of designated ranges. It's prohibited on Cherokee national forestland as well. Although someone near to me has been known to target shoot on the Cherokee from time to time ;)

Now private land is as others have said above

Thanks for the replies. This particular place is in the County but it's in a sub division. It's also 11 acres inside of the sub division that is mostly wooded. Guess I just need to check with the Sheriff's Dept.
