Hey,

I have a rock island armory commander 1911. I like the look of threaded barrels with their covers, and I want to eventually suppress all of my firearms, so my question is where can I find a good threaded barrel for a decent price that would fit such a short gun?

Most companies will only sell threaded barrels for the 5" 1911s. The 4 and 3" guns do not perform well with suppressors. I have the storm lake barrel on my Kimber Custom and it runs flawlessly. Barrel cost between 2-300, but it dropped in.

Ok, cool. I'll probably contact jarvis to see if they do custom work. Why don't shorter barrel 45s perform well with suppressing tools?

Weight plays a part of it. Thats a lot of weight that you are hanging out in front of the slide on an unsupported part of the barrel.

wouldn't getting the longer barrel just create more problems? and make it kinda goofy looking?

Any way you do it you are going to have part of the barrel hanging out of the barrel bushing. As far as I know there are no suppressors that thread into the bushing or onto the barrel inside of the bushing. This would mean there needs to be the threaded part of the barrel sticking out of the barrel bushing.

Specifications for a 1911 barrel is .578"-28tpi. And the threads should be rougly .44" long from muzzle to the shoulder.

This means you could take a standard 5" barrel and cut .31" off the end then thread it but even that might be a bit to close for comfort. Personally I would just thread it without removing any material to give you some wiggle room. Or at a minimum only take off .2" to give yourself .1 more clearance before threading it .578"-28.

Here are some good pictures of how yours will look:

Even though they are government length the barrel hanging out the end of the slide is going to be the same.

Dolomite, typical threaded barrels for a government length run about 5.75 inches so I would imagine trimming a quarter inch and threading would yield a safe setup for a commander length.

get a storm-lake barrel. They are made in TN, offer LEO discounts, and are accurate. Not to mention they sell threaded barrels with thread protector covers. They do sell complete drop-in assemblies so you don't have to take anything off your current barrel. Price is around $200 to 275 depending on your configuration and discounts. Only negative is that they normally have to make your barrel so wait time for me was around 2 months.

Also, I forgot to mention to e-mail them before you order to ask questions. They are pretty helpful and they normally get back in a day or two. I was able to order a barrel for my Para Ordnance that doesn't follow normal 1911 barrel specs. The threaded barrels are awesome and they can now coat barrels in black. e-mail support@storm-lake.com and also don't forget to include your caliber when you e-mail them what you have.
