OK...so I am lost....can I use my M&P 40C??? it is the compact...I am interested in IDPA for the fun of it, but mostly for the practice...

and how many mags do you need? My M&P holds 10+1 .40

If the "C" stands for compact and not for compensated then yes you can use it. Compensated guns aren't allowed. The combination of .40 caliber and small size will slow you down a little but if your main purpose is to get better with what you carry then I'd say go for it. I have shot several matches with a 2" S&W model 64 and didn't do too badly.

You really need at least 3 magazines, one in the gun and two spares, but more is better.

Yes, the C stands for compact.

Thanks for the info!!! I am patiently awaiting my extra mags from S&W...I will certainly be participating when I get them...

i think its really nice for S&W to throw 2 free mags at you with at a recent m&p purchase. sure makes getting into the practical shooting more easier on the wallet.

as for concealment garment i have been using a jacket since it usually on the chilly side. for summer i have my eyes on big ugly hawaiian shirts. if i can find one with pockets low on the front i'll consider myself sold. a stage at the recent tri-state event had a start with a hot weapon and spare mags on a body. stow mags at start, fire while retreating is easier to stow and later retrieve with low front pockets.

Come out and shoot IDPA at MSSA--it's only minutes from Lakeland!

I used my M&P 40c canynracer and had a great time and learned more than I ever would at a range shooting.

Planning on going again later this month.

:D

Well, I guess that rules out me shooting IDPA until I order a second barrel for my XD.

there is a IDPA shoot in greeneville on the 12th (tac2.net) and I think I will give it a try. I will shoot my Glock 19 and I have 4 mags. any suggestions for the best price for mag pouch? I have a kydex (uncle Mike's) that I think I will use? any thoughts on this holster? I'm a little nervous about my first time out in this format but I would imagine that the folks that will be there will help me out with directions and the best course of attack. any suggestions from you guys would be great.

If you are a male, Uncle Mike's kydex holsters are not legal for IDPA (too much offset). Not to worry, you should be fine at a club level-type monthly match--they are usually less formal and are especially lenient on first time shooters.

I started out with my carry gear, a Glock 23 using an IWB kydex holster. I ran with this setup for 4 years. Last year I went gamer with a Glock 34 an a kydex paddle holster.

I am a huge fan of Comp-Tac kydex holsters, best service in the industry.

What deerslayer said. In my experience most IDPA clubs will work with whatever you have for your first match. They are more interested in getting you hooked on the sport than being picky about the rules. After a shoot or two they will expect you to stick a little closer to the rule book which is online at the IDPA websight.

Take the botton screw out of the UM belt loop and use it as a paddle holster. Then you are legal.

yeah but it still sets too far off of the belt for regulation correct? The IDPA rules have pictures for kydex holsters and the belt loop offset looks like mine or at least the illegal one does. I think if the belt slots were in the holster instead of behind the holster offset about 3/4 of an inch, it would work? Any other thoughts before I buy a pancake? What about the Bianchi black widow style where the barrel is seen below the holster? I think as long as the trigger mech is covered it is good to go? Let me know.

hey et45, took me a few minutes and a few head scratches, but thanks for the info!!! I removed the lower screws and presto, paddle holster. Thanks again. You just saved me about $70!!

Luckly, you don't have to be a member of MSSA to shoot in the IDPA matches. You only have to pay the match fee. $10 I think.

what all kind of gear is a good idea to bring to a idpa mach. does anybody show a newbe what to do? about how many rounds of ammo?

Everyone at Brush Creek was great, I guess that's why were all trying to go back.

They explained everything to us and answer any questions we had.

As far as rounds I shot 48 last time for all 4 stages. I'm sure each time will be different so I would bring a 100 just in case..

This will only be my 2nd time shooting this so I probably won't be the best one for telling what type of gear to bring.

I used my M&P Compact 40 with a Fobus Paddle holster and that worked perfect for me.

If you are up to the drive, Cleveland is having their IDPA next Saturday $10 and open to the public. www.rangeissafe.com

Cleveland would be better as far as having more people to talk to.If you know Gary Harmon(he lives in your area) perhaps you could hitch a ride with him,he shoots every month at Cleveland. At Manchester you would be one of the 4 or 5 people who show up for IDPA.

I am a member of MSSA and it was hard to bite off that initial fee, BUT once your a member the yearly dues are not all that bad.

My whole family shoots me, wife and three kids. The yearly dues for MSSA come out to about the same as 2 people renting a lane at RangeUSA for an hour once a month, and since my whole family shoots, I will be shooting much more than just once a month. So for me MSSA is cheaper in the long run.
